Banks County 7-and-under football team
The Banks County 7-and-under football team’s season ended
last Saturday in the semifinals of the North Georgia Youth Football
Association’s (NGYFA) 7-and-under playoffs. The youth Leopards
entered the tournament as the no. 10 seed and knocked off sev
enth-seeded Jackson County, 13-12, and second-seeded Chestatee,
15-14. This was the farthest a Banks County team had progressed in
the playoffs.
EJCHS cheerleaders make sectionals
BY CHARLES PHELPS
The East Jackson com
petition cheerleading team
is moving onto sectionals
after finishing fourth at
region last Saturday.
Head coach Sadie Sta
ples says all the competi
tion will be “stiff,” but they
would like to beat other
local teams they’ve com
peted against all season.
“There's just something
about a hometown rival
ry,” she said. “We are look
ing to beat Monroe Area
and Hart County first. If
we take down teams from
other areas, we will be
happy but not as satisfied
as if we could beat those
teams. But our goal is to
make sure the girls, first,
are healthy. We've have
some sickness going
around the schools. Then,
we want to add difficulty to
some of our stunts. Final
ly we would like to clean
up our tumbling. We had
some hands touch down
this past Saturday and we
are looking to clean that
up.”

Takeaways from the World Series
Well, that was cer
tainly something.
The World Series
between the two lon
gest-suffering orga
nizations in baseball
did not disappoint,
as the Chicago Cubs
and Cleveland Indi
ans treated us to a
seven-game tug-of-war
that ended with the most thrill
ing games in the history of the
sport.
For the first time since 1908
—when only a handful of peo
ple on Earth today were alive
— the Cubs stand at the sum
mit of baseball.
There is no more “Wait ‘til
next year.”
Here are my takeaways
from the Fall Classic.
Cubs finally beat the
curse
Last Wednesday, prior to
Game 7 being played, one of
my co-workers and I shared
our predictions for the game.
I told him I thought Cubs
closer Aroldis Chapman, who
was acquired from the Yan
kees midseason to help take
them to the promise land,
would blow a lead in the
eighth and possibly lead to his
team’s downfall.
It was no reflec
tion on Chapman,
who had been
nearly unhitta-
ble throughout
the postseason.
He combines
an eye-popping
102-mph fastball,
which he has
learned to locate with pinpoint
precision, with a devastating
slider.
But it had more to do with
the Cubs’ curse.
And when Chapman, whose
arm had been stretched to
several multi-inning outings in
previous games, got the call,
you could sense it coming.
When Cleveland’s Rajai
Davis deposited a ball in the
left-field seats to tie the game,
the memories of the Billy
Goat, the black cat and Steve
Bartman came flooding in.
But this Cubs team was
simply different from those
that had gone before. They
had already clawed their way
back after being down 3-1 in
the series to force a deciding
game.
And Game 7 was no dif
ferent as they collected them
selves and outlasted the Indi
ans 8-7 in 10 innings.
The monkey is off their
backs now. I doubt they’ll
have to wait another 108 years
before their next moment of
glory.
The biggest sports
moment of our lives?
As I sat there watching
something that not even my
father had ever witnessed or
that either of my grandfathers
ever got a chance to see, I
wondered if this was the big
gest sports moment of our
lives.
When you look at the impli
cations of it and what it meant
to an entire city, I would have
to say yes. The only compa
rable thing would have been
the Boston Red Sox exorcising
their 86-year curse in 2004. But
even the Red Sox had been to
the World Series several times
in modern history and failed.
The Cubs have been so bad
for so long and had not even
made it to the World Series
since 1945, the year World War
II ended.
There have been unbeliev
able, transcendent moments
over the years in every sport,
but I don’t believe anything
can touch this.
