Commerce Police Department incidents
Police called 4 times to Williford St.
Four incidents on Williford
Street — two at each of two
addresses — kept Commerce
police officers busy last week.
All four were connected.
Officers responded to the
first location at 6:18 on Tues
day Nov. 1, to a report of a
stolen bicycle.
They returned the following
night at 9:32 when the same
complainant reported that
another bicycle was stolen.
The victim gave police the
name of a suspect who he
said lived nearby.
The officer went to that
address, but the suspect did
not live there anymore. The
occupant said he let the man
stay there one night, but that
the man left that morning.
The other two incidents
took place at the second res
idence.
The first was at 1:45 p.m. on
Wednesday Nov. 2, where a
woman said she saw a man of
Latino descent trying to break
into her neighbor’s residence.
The woman gave the officer
a photo of the man trying to
break in and speculated that
the suspect waits for the resi
dents to leave and tries to enter
the empty building.
When the suspect was
made aware that the neighbor
was calling police, he fled on
foot while appearing to be call
ing someone.
Police returned to that
residence the same night at
10:58 in reference to a dispute.
Police detained Aoun Khalil
Khashan, 19, for whom police
had no other address than
where he spent a single night.
Khashan was intoxicated.
He told police he’d had half
a beer. However, the resident
where Khashan had spent
one night said that Khashan
broke into his house through a
bathroom window and drank
five beers. The two argued in
the back yard, which led to
the 911 call.
Khashan was trying to leave
with the man’s bicycle when
two police officers arrived.
Police cited him for crimi
nal trespass, pedestrian under
the influence of alcohol and
underage consumption of
alcohol.
The report did not indicate
that Khashan was charged
with theft in connection with
the missing bicycles.
Other Incidents
Other matters responded to
by police during the past week
include:
•theft by taking at an
apartment on Jefferson Street
where a woman said some
one stole a car battery from
the back porch but left an
alternator that was beside it.
The woman gave police the
name of a suspect, who she
speculated traded the battery
to a drug dealer in Pleasant
Acres. Some time later, the
complainant called the officer
and said she received a call
indicating that the suspects
had the battery. The caller said
he drove the man to the drug
dealer’s house to get rid of it.
•sexual battery reported
at Northridge Medical Center
where a woman in the emer

her boyfriend. The victim was
unresponsive in a hospital bed

address between a man and
his son when the man would

both parents. The boy told the
officer that his father put him in
a chokehold. The boy ended
up going to stay with his grand
father. There were no charges.

ground area.

single shot from the his pisotl.

Road, where the loss preven

ee had stolen $403 from the
cash register from July 26 to
Oct. 7. The suspect confessed

in a written statement, and
police took out a warrant for
his arrest.

Laura Lane, is charged with
misdemeanor possession of
marijuana, possession of tools
for the commission of a crime
and violation of the Georgia

was on drugs and was trying
to take his children from her.
She said she had custody of
the children. Prather was the

Male attacks bakery
clerk during robbery
Commerce police are looking for a “big black male
with long hair” who robbed the Faith and Flour Bakery
on North Elm Street late Sunday evening.
An employee entered the business, apparently fol
lowed by someone who struck her in the face before
emptying the cash register and exiting.
The victim told police that someone hit her in the
face as she came out of the bathroom, placed some
thing — possibly a rope — around her neck, ordered
her to open the register and used the rope to lead her
around.
The robber also dumped out her purse.
The victim told police that the man had to have come
in through the back door, which she had left unlocked.
He also exited that way.
There was no mention of whether the man was
armed.
Police deployed their tracking dog to no avail, but
police found shoe prints and tire marks near a dump
ster not far from the location.
Jackson County EMS transported the victim to an
Athens hospital.

Dog attacks Jackson deputy
A pit bull recently attacked a Jackson County deputy try
ing to serve a child support civil paper at a Huff Hill Road,
Commerce, address.
The deputy approached the residence and saw two pit
bull dogs at the front porch of the mobile home — and a
beware-of-dogs sign. The officer spoke to both dogs, who
wagged their tails and acted friendly.
“I did not trust the brown dog, which was the larger and
older of the two,” the officer wrote in the incident narrative.
“I removed my ASP baton and carried it... to the front door.”
That turned out to be a prudent decision.
As the officer knocked on the door, the brown dog
jumped up aggressively toward the deputy’s face.
“I pushed the dog back and from me, it then bites me on
my left leg on the knee cap,” the officer wrote. “I extended
the ASP baton and struck the dog as hard as I could across
its head, knocking the dog to the ground.”
The dog backed off, standing between the deputy and
his car, and the deputy called for Animal Control to take
the dog.
The dog eventually went under the trailer.
“I could tell the dog did not want to have any more to
do with me,” the officer wrote. “Its head was lowered and I
could tell it was in pain from the blow to the head.”
Two other officers arrived. The dog barked at them, but
stayed under the mobile home. A third officer and the ani
mal control officer also arrived.
The deputy went to an Athens medical facility where
he was given a tetanus shot and the wound was cleaned
and bandaged. The deputy said he declined the first rabies
shot of the post-exposure treatment until the dog could be
observed. He filled a prescription for a round of antibiotics.
Officials contacted the owner of the mobile home, who
said that he did not own the dog but provided the name of
a person he said was the owner. The dog was placed under
quarantine.
