City Court Grinding Out Justice.
The city court of Cleveland, re¬
cently created by an act of the leg¬
islature. came into action Tuesday
with Judge G. S. Kytle on the
bench and Solicitor Thos. F. Un¬
derwood representing the stale,
when Mr. Chas. Thomas entered
pleas of guilt in three cases, in
which he was fined #15 and cost in
each case, totaling something over
$ 100 . Charlie, it seems, had been
at Mossy Creek campmeeting and
had violated laws prohibiting the
use of whiskey at places of public
worship.
The city court not only has juris¬
diction over tlte town ofCleveland,
hut White county as well, in all
cases except felony and such other
cases as are designated to he tried
only in superior courts. This
court, therefore,will greatly reduce
the number of cases otherwise to
be tried in the superior courts.
Fletcher Dorsey, colored, was
given a hearing in this court Wed¬
nesday on the disturbance at his
home recently and was fined $30
and costs.
From the cases already disposed
of the county treasury fund has
been credited $ 75 .

New Order Governing Road Work and Tax,
At a special meeting of the County Commissioners held Monday a
resolution was passed affecting all road workers in, the county, and
that all persons may familiarize themselves with the requirements
Covering them under this action we give the resolution in ltd!, which
is as follows:
Office of Commissioners of Roads and Revenues, ’White County, Ga.,
August 20, 1917. At a special meeting of said Board the following order and
commutation tax levy was made :
It being made to appear to the undersigned Commissioners of Roads
and Revenues that up to this date no road tax or commutation tax levy had been
fixed for the year 11 ) 17 ,
And, whereas conditions are such that a greater commutation tax should
he levied in order that the roads of the county, which have 4 been washed out by
the heavy rains during tlte Spring of the present year, might he put in condition,
that would meet with the demands of the traveling public, '
And, whereas, conditions are such that labor cannot be had at a price
less than one dollar and twenty-five cents per day, this being due to an emer
gettcy which exists in the county, *|
It is therefore considered, ordered and adjudged by the mdersigned that
all male citizens who are subject to road duty under the existing laws he, and
they are hereby required, to put in six ( 6 ) days’ labor during the present year
at the time the same is demanded, or pay in lieu thereof a commutation tax of
$ 1.25 for every day’s labor demanded, making in lien of the six days $ 7 , 50 .
All persons subject to road duty who have worked on the roads of the
County during 1917 shall have credit for the number of days worked, and all who
have paid commutation tax be credited for the amount paid,, said amount paid to
he taken oil of the said $ 7 . 50 , and all work done to he taken off of the said six
days, the remainder of the seven dollars and fifty cents to |be paid, also the re¬
mainder ot the six days to he put in. But in all cases it is left op'ionary with
the one who is subject to road duty to pay or to work, Tlie money thus raised
to-become a part ol the road tunds and to he used in repairing and working the
public roads of tlie County,
It is further ordered that this order be entered on It he minutes of the
undersigned Board. 1
