ACID POISONING!
TTie most eminent physicians recognize
that uric acid stored up in the svstem is
the cause of gout and rheumatism, that
this uric acid poison is present in the
joints, muscles, or nerves. By experi¬
menting and analysis at the Invalids’
Hotel and Surgical Institute in Buffalo,
*?’ V, Dr. Pierce discovered a combina¬
tion of native remedies that he called
•An-u-ric, which drives out the uric acid
from the system, and in this wav the
pam, swelling and inflammation subside

US. AVIATORS ARE
BOMBING TEUTONS
AIRMEN AR EOFFICERS OF THE
REGULAR ARMY AND ARE
USING FRENCH PLANES
ATTACK GERMAN POSITIONS
Americans Are Also Doing Observa¬
tion Work All Along The
Firing Line
With the American Army in France.
American army aviators have partici¬
pated in bombing raids over German
positions and have been doing obser¬
vation duty at various points of the
battle line.
The aviators are officers of the reg¬
ular army, some of whom had been fly¬
ing before the United States entered
ihe war. Others of them are men who
have been on duty at training centers.
On the bombing raids the Americans
have been carried in French planes as
bombers and observers and have been
gaining a wealth of experience which
in the future will assist them as well
as the new members of the air serv¬
ice who are arriving or are to arrive.
Some of the Americans were in sev¬
eral recent raids in which bombs were
dropped on German positions of mil¬
tary importance.
in observation work the Americans
have been acting both as observers
and pilots, flying in French machines.
This work has been done at many
points, hut none of the machines car¬
rying American aviators has flown
over the sector where (he American
troops are entrenched.
Numbers of French machines have
been turned over to the Americans for
their use, but thus far none of them
has been engaged in aerial fighting of
importance. No casualties among the
American airmen have been reported,
although enemy airplanes have fired
heavily upon them.
The allied officers are enthusiastic
over the work of the young fliers and
are of the unanimous opinion that they
are combining the daring of the Brit¬
ain fliers with the technique of the
French airmen. All the operations
in which the Americans took part have
in a measure been in the nature of in¬
struction.
WILSON WILL ORDER ALIENS
HERE TO REGISTER NAMES
President Is Convinced Step Is Neces¬
sary In Order To Prevent Fires
And Propaganda Scheme
Washington. — President Wilson is
expected to issue a proclamation soon
requiring every alien enemy within
the United States to register, as a
step toward ridding the country of
spies and sabotage.
The government has virtually de¬
cided that this procedure is the only
way open for sifting from the million
Germans in the United States the few
who are believed to be causing fires in
munition plants and warehouses, and
promoting propaganda injurious to
America’s prosecution of the war.
Some officials recommend that every
alien enemy registered be required to
report periodically to the government
in order that watch might, be main¬
tained over their movements. Under
present conditions, Germans may move
from one locality to another in the
United States without binderance pro¬
viding they do not enter the barred
zones about the munition plants and
government establishments.
Only Germans could be compelled
to register by presidential proclama¬
tion since Austrians, Turks and Bul¬
garians are not classed as enemies
under the espionage law. Congress
might extend the restrictions to those
nationalities, however.
Plenty Of Toys “Made In America”
Washington. — There will he no
shortage of toys to fill the stockings
of American children this Christmas,
despite the almost complete absence
of the “Made in Germany." nA an¬
nouncement by the department of com¬
merce said American manufacturers
had developed an industry which not
merely could supply home demands,
but export a surplus—something never
before known in the American toy
trade.
Patriotic Leaders Call Off War Strikes
Buffalo, N. Y.—All strikes affecting
government work in shipping, muni¬
tions and other war enterprises have
been called off by the building trades
section of the American Federation of
Labor, it was announced by Secretary
Morrison. A conference of representa¬
tives of building trades heads and gov¬
ernment, representatives will be held
in Washington within a few days, to
go over Ihe situation. Pending the
result of this meeting orders have
been sent to the president of locals
to put their men back to work.
Anarchy Now Reigns in Petrograd
Copenhagen.—A dispatch to the Ber
lingske Tidende says that Eric Hjorth,
a Swedish director, who left Petrograd
and arrived at Haparanda, declared
that the situation in the Russian cap¬
ita! is terrible. Virtually all adminis¬
tration had ceased, the authorities
having given up all attempts to con¬
tinue work. Bolsheviki soldiers and
sailors were sweeping through the city
like robber bands, commiting ail sorts
of excesses and crime. Food was ex¬
ceedingly scarce and prices beyond
reach.
Electric Device ror blind.
A Paris scientist, M. Ohas. Lam¬
bert, has devised a method of writing
which will he very useful for blind
persons, especially mutilated persons
who have lost their hands or forearms,
the reading of the signs being done
by a specially designed electrical de¬
vice. In the first place the characters
composing the text are printed in
Morse alphabet on the same method
ns Is employed for producing letters
in relief on letter paper, that is by
printing with a thick paste which then
solidifies and leaves a raised letter.
This method now replaces the old em¬
bossing process where cost is an item,
for it is much cheaper. The only dif¬
ference from the usual Morse alpha¬
bet is to place the dashes vertically
Instead of horlzontalllv. Reading of
these characters can then be done by
persons deprived of their hands, by
Hie use of a very simple electric de¬
vice which is run over the characters
in relief which are printed with a spe¬
cial metallic ink.
