Within a few days, as will be
seen from advertisements in this
issue of the Courier, the people ol
White county will have the oppor¬
tunity to hear the statements of
two candidates for Mr. Hardwick’s
seat in the U. S. Senate, at ttie
court-house in Cleveland.
These gentlemen are mighty
anxious for the favorable opinion
and the ballot of the voters, just as
all candidates are, and they will
tell their hearers of the many
things they have done or will do
for you—anything they may have
done or would do to tlie detriment
of the public interest they will be
careful to avoid, if they have done
such things.
As a citizen, and as u part of the
government under which you live,
it is a duty you owe yourself to
inform yourself to the utmost of
the past conduct of each of the
public servants, and if you find any
of them unworthy of the trust they
are seeking, you will take pleasure
in voting against them.
Understand we refer to all can¬
didates who may be in the field.
On the other hand, if we find a
man who is worthy and well quali¬
fied, who has a record of standing
for the public interest, you natur¬
ally would support that man unless
you seek to satisfy prejudice or
selfishness instead of the public.
This is a time when what is
needed more than ever is men cap¬
able of dealing honestly with the
questions affecting public welfare.
The deeds of men today prove
that we have unfaithfulness and
dishonesty in men in high pluces
who in fact are baseless wretches
who seek nothing but money,
money and more money. The tre¬
mendous swindles perpetrated upon
the government in recent months is
sufficient proof. This disrespectful
and disloyal gang are busy in the
political circles, as well as in the
legislative halls, of the nation. He
is intelligent, but his is intelligence
misappropriated.
Hear these and the other candid¬
ates at every opportunity, and per¬
mit not yourself to go wild over
their carefully prepared speeches,
then return to your homes and
think well over the public interest
and tiie sincerity of the speakers,
and select from amongst them
around your own fireside, absent
from the evil influence of tlie tnan
who pretends to know so much of
some particular candidate that none
else is fit to vote for but the man of
his choice—and he may be a great¬
er menace to public interest than
the candidate himself—your man
to vote for.
The Third Quarterly Conference
for the Cleveland Charge will be
held at Mossy Creek Church Friday
August 9 th, All official members
ure urged to be present.
The seats for the Baptist Church
have arrived, and the committee
hopes to have them placed in the
church beforo Sunday, for upon
that day protracted services com¬
mence. The new seats will be
quite an improvement to the in¬
ward appearance of the church
and a decided comfort to the con¬
gregations.

Profits and Prices
Profits may be considered
from two angles:
1st— Their effect on prices;
2nd—ks a return to investors.
When profits are small as
compared with sales, they have
little effect on prices.
Swift & Company’s profits
are only a fraction of a cent
per pound on all products sold,
and if eliminated entirely
would have practically no
effect on prices.
Swift & Company paid 10
per cent dividends to over 20,000
stockholders out of its 1917
profits. It also had to build
extensions and improvements
out of profits; to finance large
stocks of goods made necessary
by unprecedented requirements
of the United States and Allied
Governments; and to provide
protection against the day of
declining markets.
Is it fair to call this
profiteering ?
