Cleveland High School Ends
With Successful Term
Cleveland High School closed
last Friday night with a very
successful term and a splendid at¬
tendance on each occasion.
The commencement sermon was
delivered by Rev, H. H. Humph¬
ries in a very touching and forceful
manner.
Thursday night was devoted to
the usual society exercises as they
are conducted when holding a joint
meeting. In these societies every
pupil above certain grades is com¬
pelled to participate, which gives
him a very unusul bit of training
that is so essential and vitally
neccessary when he enters life’s
work. So many people, we regret
to say, are helpless when they
must express themselves at a pub¬
lic gathering on a question. This
program was well conducted and
each participant did his part well.
One part of she program that
seemed to attract the attention of
that splendid audience was the
songs.
Friday night was devoted to the
graduation exercises. Several able
addresses delivered. The principal
speaker of this occasion was Col.
R. P. Gaillard, of Gainesville, that
brilliant orator and lawyer, who
always can hold the attention of a
crowd, matters not how large.
Col. Gaillard’s address was nlofig
the liue of a progressive, education
and an upbuilding nature He
told that splendid audience that he
regretted to see no boys in the
class. He also told them that he
was glad to see the day when the
women of this country had equal
rights to the men. He also told of
how the women were taking hold
of tremendous questions and acting
on them sensibly, while the men
were only playing politics with
them. Col. Tims. F. Underwood
introduced Col. Gaillard.
Judge J. W. H. Underwood and
Col. C. H. Edwards made splendid
addresses commending the work
the school was doing.
All of the faculty at this term
were lady teachers, and whose
work has been generally satisfact¬
ory.
Mrs. J. W, Marion has been re¬
elected Supt. and Misses Shannon,
Stephens and Wiggins will return
as teachers for the next term. The
ptjier teachers are young ladies who
will graduate from S. N. S. this
term.

Mr, Morgan Writes
Open Letter To Editor
Mr. Jus. P. Davidson,
Editor The Cleveland Courier,
Cleveland, Ga.
Dear Sir :
Replying to that part of your
letter of the 25th in regard to your
attitude towards road development
in this section. I will take pleas¬
ure in making an opportunity soon
to talk to you fully regarding the
highway situation in this territory.
I can assure you that the Highway
Department has been doing all
that they possibly could for the
mountain section of Northeast
Georgia. You are aware that nix
of the counties in this road district
have no railroad facilities. All of
these counties without railroad fac¬
ilities have a road either completed
to some railroad point, or the con¬
nection out to the railroad is under
contract for construction. You
may not fully realize the fact that
that the Highway Department is
already investing approximately
seven dollars to every one invested
by our county, for your immediate
benefit. You refere in your letter
to the failure to get your county to
agree to proposals made at differ¬
ent times to finance a road leading
from Cleveland, via Helen, to
Hiawassee. It has always been
your county that has stood in the
way of this development. One of
the first roads proposed in theState
of Georgia was proposed by Towns
county, leading from Iliawnssee to
Helen and Cleveland, Your coun¬
ty for reasons best known to you
and your citizens, did not co-oper¬
ate with Tudge Johnson to get
this road. Judge Johnson was so
eager to get some construction
started in (1 is county that lie aban¬
doned the project leading to Cleve¬
land and took the matter up with
Rabun county. All of this road
from Hiawassee to Clayton has
been completed, except eight miles
of same. The plans and surveys
have been completed on this and
the county will move their forces
on this last stretch within a few
days.
In 1921 your county had a second
opportunity to get this road by
Helen on the map. At a conferen¬
ce held at Helen Mr. Neel propo¬
sed to undertake to build two roads
leading out of White county,
through the Blue Ridge Moun¬
tains, one through either Erogtown
or Tesnatee Gap. If the county
had accepted this proposition we
would not have been in position to
finance the section of the road
from Cleveland to Hall County
Line. We would not have been in
position to finance all of the two
roads north from Cleveland. We
would have been in position to
have financed, however, the moun¬
tain sections of these roads on the
State map and the state would
have assumed maintainance on
both roads. The state also would
have assumed obligations to con¬
struct both of these roads, as soon
funds are available. Mr. Neel
made an offer to your county as
stated above.
Your county offials did not see
fit to accept this proposition im¬
mediately and asked time for
futher consideration of same. At
their next regular meeting they
made the State Highway Depart¬
ment a counter proposition. They
proposed that the State Highway
Department build fromHali county
to Cleveland, that they take the
balence of the funds available and
build as much of the Unicoi route
as possible. They requested that
the Highway Department abandon
construction on the road leading
to Blairsville. The State High¬
| way Departrnent already had a
conlrac t with . Union county to
CLEVELAND, GEORGIA, MAY
ASBESTOS BUZZING
Several from here attended the
commencement exercises at Cleve¬
land last week.
Messrs Coleman Freeman and
Walter Eliott are now engaged in
making cross ties.
Mrs. Dan Potts, of Hixson,
Term., has been spending some
time with her farther, who is not
getting any better.
Mrs. Jus. Parks, who has been
living in Habersham county for
some time, is now back at her old
home.
Messrs Sears, Hunt and Faulk¬
ner have been doing some good
work on the public roads.
Mrs. W. C. Densmore, who
has been very feeble, is some better
at this time.
Ma. John Thomas was hauling
cross ties to Cleveland last Satur¬
day.
The old time school had what
they called exhibitions, but the\
are called commencements now,
The curiculnm was the same in all
the schools—one dog eared blue
back—Webster’s spelling book;
one thumb card ; one slate with one
pencil ot the same material; one
sore toe ; one stone bruise on the
left heel; ope sty on the upper lid
of the left eye and the faA con¬
siderable swelled by having had a
combat the day before with the
yellow jackets. The old schools
served the day and the generation
well. They did not attempt 'to
teach much but the three R’s, hut
it was well taught. We learned
to -read in tne old tim* •apu’If?.
But they have made great advnne
menfs since that lime.
construct the road inUnion county.
The Highway Department could
not honorably abandon the con¬
tract with Union county. The re¬
sult was that she proposal of your
county oITTci s was rejected.
Negotiate s were then resumed
for building ie road leading to
Blairsville. After considerable
discussion your county commission¬
ers agreed to lake up the construct¬
ion of the Blairsville road. I
think that your county has not
been discriminated against in this
matter andjthat the Highway Dep¬
artment has made every effort to
co-operate with you and to give,
as far as possible, the things de¬
sired by your citizens. The High¬
way department, however, was
not willing to give your preference,
if it required abandoning contracts
made previous to that time.
I believe that the record of the
Highway Department in tiffs mat¬
ter has been above board and has
been frank and has had at all times
the interest of the entire section at
heart. The Highway Department
is spending within your borders
and one .work that will benefit
your county more than any other
county in the teritory, more money
in proportion to the amount of
money invested by White county
than in any other county in|lhe
State of Georgia. In view of these
facts I believe you should be as
patient and as sparing as possible
of your criticisms of the minor
mistakes that the Highway Depart¬
ment has made. I assure you that
I am heartily interested in the de¬
velopment of this section and am
ready to co-operate with you at all
times in the development in our
own territory.
Very truly yours,
11 , W. Morgan,
Division Engineer.
When the legislature meets they
should consider very seriously the
enactment of a biennial session of
the legislature in Georgia.
