ASBESTOS BUZZING
The children’s exercises at Yo
nah, Sunday were well attended
and the selection by the little folks,
the singing, the addres; by Col. A.
H. Henderson and the dinner were
just fine.
Times have changed the old
school house that stood there with
its soapstone chimney and slab
benches, the spring whose waters
were always muddy and had a
heavy coat of butter milk caused
by pouring the milk above the
spring. There was a yellow jack¬
et’s nest between the house and the
spring whose inmates were always
busy. Around that nest were tons
of rocks and several cords of sticks
thrown there by the pupils. It
was there that they played marbles,
mumble peg, ran foxes races, hull
gull, jeek in the bush, cut him
down arid ducked every fellow that
shouted school butter.
The little swimming pond where
the children were cautioned not to
go until they learned how to swim,
and the mill that was close by that
played half a day with a red grain
of corn has disappeared.
It was there that they learned
their a b c’s and spelled their ha’s
and ja’s. This was before they
taught the phonetic method of
reading. The teacher told the boys
who studied arithmetic that they
could sit out doors. So nearly all
the boys bought a Sanford arith¬
metic. After several weeks some
one asked some of us how we were
getting along in mathematics and
he was told that the most of us

It was there that they had those
spelling mutches and speakings on
Friday afternoons and all were ex¬
pected to say something. Some
recited “Fellow Citizens of Turkey
Buzzard Town,” some “The Blue
and the Gray,” some, “I had a

But some had no speech and they
recited a song.
