Have- Narrow Escape
When Lightning Kills Mules
Entering a sheJter on their farm
below Turner Creek ford from the
violent thunder and rain storm
Monday afternoon, Jim Sutton and
his son, Clifford, were severiy
shocked when lightning struck the
building, killing his two mules,
with which they were plowing.
The building was ignited by the
bolt, and Clifford was forced to
drag tiie inert body of his father
over the bodies of tlie mules out of
the building into the down pour of
rain.
Clifford made his way to the
home of John Turner, who lived a
few hundred yards away, and told
the miraculous story. Mr. Turner
took the two men home, when
tnedtcul attention was administered
them.
Their clothes and shoes were
torn into shreds from the eff'ects of
the lightning bolt.
They will recover unless unfore*
seen developments set up from ex¬
posure.
The mules were ' consumed by
the flames of the building.
Mr. Sutton and his son suffered
painfully from the shock and ex¬
posure.

Non-Sectarian Organization
Perfected In White County
The White County Laymen’s
Movement, a non-denominational
and non-sectarian organization,
was organized in Cleveland Sun¬
day, June 6.
This organization has as its pur
pore to bring all the church mem¬
bers into a body with the view of
not only creating a better fellow¬
ship among various denominations
of the county, but to foster better
and nobler citizenship.
Rev, Win. Greenway organized
brotherhood classes among a num¬
ber of tiis churches, Methodist, and
the results were so pleasing and
helpful that the leaders of the
county body sought to embrace all
the denominations into one organ¬
ization and the response was heart
ity received.
Mr. E. P. Mallory, of Nacoo
cliee, was elected chairman of the
evangelistic committee. Mr. M.
J. Williams, of Helen, was elected
chairman and Mr. J. Al. Black,
secretary.
The organization will present a
very interesting program at Louds
vilie, Sunday, June 2 1, at 3 P, Al.
It is the desire to have al) active
church laymen become affiliated
with the movement.
At a meeting of the County
Board of Education held ott the
7th, day of June 1926 it was re¬
solved by the board that it would
not contract witli teachers to teach
in the common schools of the coun
term w | 10 did not hold a
first grade license or certificate and
that those teachers who have had
normal training or that have at¬
tended summer schools would be
preferred.
This resolution was passed look¬
ing to the upbuilding of the county
schools. It is the sense of the
board that the country children
should have as good teachers as the
town children. This rule will not
be varied from unless in cases of
absolute necessity. Trustees of
the county will take notice of this
ruling and in the selection ot
teachers be governed accordingly.
The day has come when teachers
must qualify themselves to teacli if
they teach.
This the 10th day of June 1926.

Busy Season Now On
For Charlie
Well, jlootl folks, this is Charlie's busy season*
But Charlie has made every preparation for
this heavy sumniei trade. Charlie is always
looking out for his heavy business.
When you want fresh groceries, candies, cigars,
cigarettes and real ice cold drinks you can (hid
them at Charlie's, because he replaces his stock
each week. That is one reason why people
like to trade at Charlie's. Do you realize that
M there are merchants who keep goods on their
shelves for years and years? Then, can you
expect such stock to he satisfactory?
^ cs sir, it takes just lots of money to operate a
business like Charlie's. But Charlie gets it, be¬
cause the people have confidence in him. If a
business doesn't pay a good profitable income
it isn’t managed properly.
