There are comparatively few statues

There are also famous statues of

Various Legends Tell
of the Origin of Music
Music, most authorities agree, had
a vocal origin. Some believe man at¬
tempted to imitate the sounds of birds,
others say bis melody developed from
bunting calls or other vocal signals
employed in primitive life. A Chinese
legend goes so far as to declare that
a miraculous bird provided the mu¬
sical scale, while the Japanese say
music was devised by the gods to
lure the sun-goddess from a cave
where she had retired. The Arabian
legend has it that Modhar, a camel
driver, fell from bis seat and hurt his
arm. In pain he called out “Ja,
Jodali.” His fine voice stirred up the
camels so that tiiey moved more quick¬
ly. So (who could not guess the re¬
sult '.) from that time all eainel-driv
ers sang.
It is interesting to note that the
Greek word from which “music” Is
derived was used by that people to
embrace all the arts over which the
Nine Muses were held to preside.
Hence, “Music” in those days includ¬
ed all those brandies of education
concerned with the development of
the mind as opposed to the body.
What moderns specifically call music,
they referred to as “harmony,”
Mr. Noah Gi list rap committed
suicide Wednesday afternoon by
sending a load of shot from a shot¬
gun lie succeeded in discharging
by stepping on a siring tied to the
trigger after placing the muzzle of
the barrel on his abdomen.
Mr. Gillstrap left his home be¬
fore noon witli hts gun and Bible
telling his loved ones lie was going
on the ridge, which is situated be
hinp his house, and kill himself.
Parties searched for him where lie
told he was going but could not
find no trace of him.
He was first noticed by Arvil
Allen, who resides ori the Chatta¬
hoochee river in Habersham coun¬
ty, a short distance, from Floyd
Shelnutt’s, on a small island. Arvil
started toward nint when he ob¬
served something was wrong with
Noah’s actions, but Was told by
Gillstrap not to come closer or lie
would shoot him. Arvil got word
to Elisha London, Floyd Shelnutt
and of bets, who come on the scene
Elisha started to Noah who reach¬
ed for his gun and Arvil shot him
in the legs will) a shotgun. Noah
told them not to shoot any more as
he would finish it and stepped on
the siring that was tied to the trig
ger.
The Sheriff of Habersham coun¬
ty was notified and he sutnmaned
the corrior, where an inquest was
held.
He was interred at Pleasunt Re¬
treat cemetery Thursday afternoon

To the Vetera of White County:
Having been solicited by thousands of
citizens of the Ninth district by letter,
personal solicitation and otherwise to al¬
low the use of my name in the forth¬
coming primary election to succeed my¬
self in Congress, 1 have decided to yield
to their wishes. Many have expressed
the opinion that my services are especial¬
ly needed by the people during the next
leriii, and as they have been good enough
to honor and trust me in the past, audios
they have presented the matter in the
light of ft public duty, |I would be un¬
grateful not to respond to their express¬
ed wishes now. The pride of my life is
in doing what the people want me to do
and it will be a labor of love to me in
working for them. As I have the fisi'iir
