Red Cross To Limit Adpeals Through.
Strong Reserve From Membership
Enrollment
Hope that in t lie coming year
the scope oi appeal- for disaster re
lief can be- limited was expressed
today bv Mrs. W. A. Whitmire,
Chairman of the Red Cross mem
bership campaign forVVhite county.
who said that through the antici¬
pated growth of RedCross strength
from increased membership this
fall, this result may be achieved.
Formerly, she recalled, the peo¬
ple of a community were accustom¬
ed to receive numerous appeals for
disaster relief contributions, when¬
ever some calamity -truck in their
territory requiring material relief.
The average community u lias
been figured, receives now not
more than one or two such appeals
each year. A- membership in¬
creases the funds a vail able for
emergencies also increase. Such a
teserv of course, it was explain¬
ed,:. community asset.
During the past tear tile Nation¬
al Bed Cross served m fifty-one
di-asters in addition to its huge
Drought Relief operation. Yet no
Hatio- a! appeal tor funds was made
,pt for Drought Relief. The
itional portion of Roll Call re
- lit v cents from each mem
—enables tlie Red Cross, to
carry this service.
Mrs. Whitmire explained tiim
local membership i. the RedCro-s
in each community means a -Uong
national organization which can
respond immediately to any uuttsuai

forces, and can raise funds from '

aC Ct EMPLOYED
It is said that many people are out
ot employment; no work to do. If wo
look about us wo can find plenty to
do, and work that will. pay. How bet¬
ter can one labor than for las health •
or tho well-being of ins neighbor? If
you are out of work why not turn your
time to profit by working for the ben¬
efit of the. community; by making your
home, yard end suroitndings sani
tarv. Why not clean up t-tie back
yard, clean out the ditches and destroy
the nesting place--; for files and mosqui¬
toes. Why should not the town author)
ties and counts officials give employ
meat to the people by draining ponds
that give breeding places for malaria
and dengue carrying mosquitoes. Why
not build a sanitary privy for your
home, town and school. It will pay
us well to do this; in fact, ah motley
invested iu the prevention of disease
pays a thousand fold. This is true
even in a small way, but county-wide
and v! ale-wide by the employment cf
a full-time health officer ami nurses,
will always pay tremendous dividends.
