OL. XXXV 11 I No. 9
Tomorrow’s Sun
(Newspaper Features, Iuc.)
By Roger Winter
William Randolph Ilenr*t has
been au absentee landlord of Geor¬
gia for 25 years, during which he
has visited our state once or twice.
ThegAtlanta Georgian has been
operated by him by a proce-sion of
publishers who have succeeded one
another with bewildering rapidity.
The absence of Mr. Hearst from
Georgia and the frequent turnover
of the Atlanta Georgian publishers
may account for tne Georgian s
total ignorance of Georgia condi¬
tions }
Mr. Hearst and his organisation
may be intimately acquainted with
the sidewalks of New ork, the
south side of Chicago, the water
front of San Franciisco, and the
motion picture element of Los
Angles but what they do NO l
know about Georgia |wou'd till a
library'. Recently Mr. Hearst *
Georgian published lor dittribution
among Northern advertising
ageneies a so-called survey of con
ditions in R 1 RALGeirgui which
asserted and attempted to prove
that ‘purchasing power in rural
Georgia is nou-existent. J he
survey was illustrated with picture
of most ramshackle tenant house
that could be found, and the whole
purpose was to make it appeat that
Georgia is about as tar advanced
as Ethiopia.
The writer has taken the trouble
•to find out from the United State
Department of Agriculture anc
other reliable sources what rural
Georgia has done i* 1935 V u P ro
oiucing ne yveallli. Here are the
figures :
Cotton. $71 9,30000; Corn,%30.
500 000 ; iDairy Products, $‘Td,
ooo.ogo ; Poultry, ,$ 2 o,ooo,ooo; 'to¬
bacco, $ 14,000,000 ;Peanuts, $ 1 . 2 .
5000000; Cattle, $12,000,000;
Hogs, $5 750,000; Fruits, $8 5 ooO
O 00 ; Grains, $2,750,000; Hay, *3
500,000 ; Sweet Potatoes, $3 5 °°’
000; Irish Potatoes, $700,000;
Beans and Peas, $900,000; Pecans.
$750000; Melons, $1,600,000:
Cane Syrup, $i, 75 °.° ou ; TOTAL
$214,530 000.
Where was this wealth pro¬
duced? Was it produced up
the pavements of Atlanta anti
other cities where Mr. Hoover
said the grass would grow ii
Roosevelt was elected?
Il might further interest Mr
Hearst to be informed that Georgia
is the largest -.tate east of the Mis
