Pension Association Formed Here
Cleveland, Ga., May 24—The
White County Old-Age Pension
Association was organized here
yesterday ut. a rally at the court
house following an address by
Representative J. M. C. Town¬
send, of Dade county.
E. C. Hefuer, White county
member of }lie general assemblj
who supported the old-age pension
plan vetoed by Governor Tidnuige
was in charge of arrangements for
the meeting, j. K Keniiner was
elected chairman of the group; J.
L. Brown, v ee chairman; Henry
Allison, secretary, and William
Oliver, assistant secretary.
The chairman announced that a
vigorous old-age pension drive
would be launched in every militia
district in White county.
Representative Townsend charg¬
ed that Governor Tahnudge vetseii
the Rivers-Grayson old-age pen¬
sion proposal and now was at¬
tempting to tie up : he pension sup¬
porters with the Townsend plan,
••Those of us in the general as¬
sembly who iiuve been seeking old
age pensions for Georgia are ask¬
ing nothing for more the state than
participation in the pension pro¬
gram of President Roosevelt,”
Townsend declared. "Despite
the similiarity of my name 1 am as
against 'he Townsend pension plan
as anyone in this world but oer
lainly am for getting our old folks
in Georgia as much as $30 a month
The Townsend plan call for t 2 oo
per month pensions. Oi course it
it would be folly to try to pay this.
“Governor Tahnudge and Gover¬
nor Taimadge alone is responsible
for tfje old people of Georgia be¬
ing on the pauper rolls today. If
he had not vetoed the pension it
would be accruing to our old folks,
