Damage to bean crops in cen¬
tral and north Georgia by the
Mexican beetle may ha successfully
combated by use of rotenone
poison, recent experiments of the
Georgia Experiment Station show.
Results of the experiments, con¬
ducted by Theodore L. Bissell,
were announced Friday by Chan¬
cellor S. V. Sanford, of the Uni¬
versity System.
Rotenone is a powerful poi-on
which, when applied in sprays or
dusts, kills tire Mexican beetle, as
well as cabbage worms and m.st
species of plant lice. It can be
used without burning plants or
harming humans, experiments
show
Bottle damage to Georgia bean
crops has been increasing in re
cent weeks, and scientists urge im
mediate application of rotenone to
destroy the menace. The poison
must be applied to the under sides
of the plant leaves, where the in¬
sects feed.
Bean plants should be destroyed
as soon as they have stopped bear¬
ing, or beetles will continue to in¬
ject later crops.

Red Coral Always Prized
It is red coral that is and alwayt
tas been prized, not solely for jew
airy and buttons, but as a charm t‘
oring safety, health and secrets not
revealed to the ordinary person. As
ancient Gauls rushed headlong in
to battle, they trusted their safety tc
their swords, strength and the
“magic” coral imbedded' in their
shields or helmets. Many Italians
and Indians regard coral as protec

world's red coral comes from the
reefs off the Mediterranean coast of
