Si ALMOST EVERY day we read of some shocking incident in one of the large cities of this coun¬ try. We know that crime is in¬ creasing at an alarming rate, especially among our young peo In many areas, the public streets are un safe because of lawless ele ments roaming about looking for trouble. Murder, rob bery and as sault — these are acts of the criminal, the person to the law means nothing. Here is a mentality, often a demented one, which breaks the law with disregard for the life and prop¬ erty of his fellow citizen. ♦ * * BUT WHAT is happening to America when supposedly law abiding citizens do things that are every bit as shocking and disgraceful—and more themselves? in some respects—as crimes What are we coming to, what ia happening to the morals and basic goodness of the American people when they are indifferent to the distress of fellow human To what depths have we fallen when citizens stand idly by and (Hoi prtpar/d op H f Wn w «l (is«J ii The rose is rod. the violet, blue, This little bill is overdue. No one went to her as¬ sistance. No one even summoned the police. To what extent have the morals of people decayed when they hurry on about their own business and turn deaf ears to a young girl’s screams for help after she had been criminally assaulted ? We heard of such conduct mnong uncivilized peoples who live without any code of law, ethics or moral behavior. But when such as this happens on our streets, we had best stop and take stock of our civiliza tion. 0 0 * THESE WERE NOT viola¬ tions of any criminal law, and the people involved cannot be pum ed for what they did —or failed to do. But they nonethe¬ less go against all that we hold to be good and true. It is not as important where these incidents took place as it is that they happened at all. In my opinion, it is time that we stopped and asked ourselves in which direction we are head in#. THE CLEVELAND (GA.)
