Hear Telephone User: i

We would like to call your attention to one major and costly item tl. at makes
now up part of your tele¬
phone service charge*—the 10% excise tax on local and long distan ce telephone service. Last
year oui
subscribers paid *99,62*.96 fat Federel Excise Taxes. Your telephone company receives part of this

This so-called Wartime Excise Tax ection agency for the Federal government.
10% tax—it merely acts as a coll has been around so long it has whiskers and longer than
grayer
Uncle Sam’s. Actually It was started during World War II when funds
emei gcncy were needed and tele
phone facilities were scarce.
However, despite the *£t that World War U ended nearly 20 years ago, the Wartime Tax telephone
on
service, that was supposed to be TEMPORARY, is still around tapping your family for a full 10% ol
the amount you pay for your tele phone service.
For a tax that was originally designed to help the nation meet a temporary
emergency, we believe it has
performed Its duty, and should be retired to join other tax measures that have served their country
iVcU*
Our records tell us that OUly two home utility services have ever been the subject federal
of excise
toxes telephone and electricity. The tax on electricity was imposed in 1941 when federal
a tax was im¬
posed for the first time on home telephone service. Yet, in 1951, despite the tremendous demand
for
federal revenue created by the Korean War, the tax on electricity was described
as excessively bur
deasome and was promptly repeajed— leaving the telephone tax as the only remaining
one on the
federal tax books applying to the four household utilities-water, gas, electricity,
and telephone.
All fat all, it requires only a scant knowledge of Washington procedures to realize that
complete repeal
of the unfair and discriminatory excise tax on telephone service will come about when—and
only when
tho nation’s telephone users let their Congressmen know they want the “Temporary”
tax ended before
it becomes “permanent!”
HERE’S HOW YOU CAN HELP; (1) WRITE YOUR CONGRESSMAN AND SENATOR AND
PROTEST
THE CONTINUANCE OF THE 16% WARTIME EXCISE TAX ON LOCAL AND LONG
DISTANCE TELE¬
PHONE SERVICE; AND (2) CONDEMN ANY PLAN TO I’ROTOSE CONTINUANCE OF THE TAX.
If enough of .the nation’s telephone users do just that, the day may soon come when YOU pocket
can
that 16% tax you are now paying because you are a telephone user.
Sincerely yours,
