Many of us start to think about resolu tions in the new year. I have never been much on New Year’s resolutions. Usually, within a week or two, those resolutions have gone by the wayside. I take a different approach, not only to the new year, but to life itself. I think we should all look forward, but at the same time, look back at all the things we learned during the course of the previous year. A new year does bring with it renewed hope and hopefully new found joy as well as peace for us all. We all like for things to go as planned, but usually, they do not. That is simply life. I truly believe that things are not supposed to go as we have planned because there is a much greater being who Scotty Womack orchestrates our lives. We tend to lose sight of the fact that ultimately we are not in control. We all like to think that we’re steering the ship, but truth be told, we are not. We are along for the ride as the captain of our lives steers us in the way in which we should go. When I was younger, I cer tainly thought that it was all up to me. I was the captain and I was bound and determined to take my ship where I wanted it to go. I was in charge. I knew what I was doing and did not need direction from anybody or anything. Well, fortunately, I found out pretty early on that I was not in charge, but despite the fact that I knew it was not up to me, I tried very hard to go the way I wanted to do. Stubborn would be somewhat of an understate ment if I were to describe my self. I tried with all my might to do it my way. It often takes a lot of living for us to learn, but we should learn to pay attention because the captain of our lives knows the way in which we should go. I don’t think we should beat ourselves up for being slow- learners because things take time. We’ve all had to do a fair amount of living to learn what was necessary in our lives. When I was much younger, I begrudged problems, delays or difficulties. I’ve asked the question many times “Why can’t things just work out?” In fact, I have asked that ques tion so many times it’s truly shameful. The captain of my life finally made me see and now I embrace problems or delays because they carry so much meaning. C.S. Lewis wrote “pain is the megaphone that God uses to rouse a deaf world”. Truer words have never been written. We as humans generally learn through pain, discomfort or being made to wait. In the rural South as children we learned early on, that wrong actions would be met with a switch or a leather strap of some sort. It’s funny though, we were being taught at a young age that forcing our way would be met with pain and yet we marched right into adulthood still trying to do that very thing. I certainly did. I was absolutely adamant that I was going to do it my AS THE SUN SETS way. Fortunately, for me, for us all, the captain of our lives is patient. Slowly, pain fully slow in fact, I began to under stand that I had to relinquish control. I have learned that once we relinquish control things do in fact get easier. I also learned that I never was in con trol, I just thought I was. I have found out that these delays and problems that we en counter along the way are so necessary. We all want to have smooth sailing with ample wind in our sails and water as slick as glass without any waves. Unfortunately that is not the case. We need the waves and the storms in order to shape us into who we were meant to be. Those strong winds that blow are ultimately pushing us to where we need to be. As we enter this new year may we stop and remember that so much can change in only a year’s time. If anybody out there is currently facing a storm, remember our captain has a purpose in allowing that storm. We might be bruised and battered, but we will make it to the other side of whatever great difficulty we may be facing. Less than a year ago in my own life, the storm was raging as I lay in a hospital bed unable to walk, but now, I am once again able to walk and enjoy my life. The winds have been strong and the waves tossed me about, but it was all with purpose. You see, I know the captain of my life and it was all done out of love. The sun is setting on the old year, but as it rises on the new, may we all be filled with hope and may our hearts be full of trust. Despite what storms may arise, let us trust, trust completely, in the captain of our lives.
