Exlraft of a Utter f’om a gentle

Una. t 9 his friend in this, town.
i After taking a view of all the
helUgerent powers , he fays :—
“ All Germany may be even
tually revolutionized, and be
indebted to the (pint of French
jmen, for the ble(Tings of free-1
men. Poland, poor unhappy j
Poland I may yet arife from the |
bondage of the perfidious vil
lains who have endeavored to
extinguifh her name from the
lift of nations. And the illuf
-1 trious Kofciufko, with his pa
triotic comrades, maybe refto-!
red to their native foil. Good
i Heavens ! with what imprcflions
of our degeneracy mull the gal
lant heio have left our (bores! j
Some vile papers here werefo 1
fhamelefs as to boaft that none!
but United Infhnien, and a few|
poor Democrats, welcomed the i
much injured patriot among us, I
or afterwards entertained him.
Certain pretended great men,
obferved towards him, an indif-'
ference, a coynefs that will ever
di’grace their charafters, Per
haps it was confiftency in them 1
not to countenance the perfecu- j
ted lo dicr, After having re-j
nounced the glorious caufe for
which he fo nobly fought, andi
was covered with wounds. Per- i
fi iiou'* ap »dates ! Yourcondufti
to that celebiated child of mif
fortun-, completely expofes
your perfidious fentiments.
Ceafe delefted babblers, to prate
with an rchy anddiforder. You 1
cou'd with complacence, fee a
naion, double the population
of our s, lobbed of liberty and
property by »egu argovernments,
and you beheld the man, who
drove to reftore both to his
country, forced to flee to Arne-1
nca for refug’. His pde ema
ci ted form, drew troin you no
lv apathetic feelings, no pity
for his umemitted fufferings.
‘‘‘ To the honor of- judore
M‘K.ean, gen. Gates, and a few’
m jic republican charaftels, they
mterrainecl the worthy lit anger
?it their hofpitable tabbs; and
by their delicate attentions to
him, Toothed the angadh of a
mind juftly deprelfcd at his
country's fate.
“ And yet there are wretches
among us, who would lichen at
the luccefs of the French in
emancipating Poland, or any
part of the world Pom flavery.
Thofe beings aie called federal
jifls, and pretend to be juft, vir
tuous, and charitable. But the
hypocrily of the Pharifees, can
not much longer cloak the vici
oufnefs of their hearts. Liberty,
bell gift of Heaven, is purfuing
her rout through Europe. Her
flandard will be unfurled on the
banks of the Danube, and per
haps on thofe of the Ganges.
Alia and Africa, will welcome
tne triumphant maid, and vie
with Europe for her favors.
And the royalifls of this coun
try, will dilcover that this is not
an icra for the eltablilhment of
monarchy among us.'*

Mr. Day,
A MIGHTY little fon of oM
Efeu's, having in your Jaft rum
ber commenced a mod tremen
dous attack upon an old lady 0 f
unfullied reputation, who is at
this time far diflant from th e
protection of her natural guar,
dians, it becomes neceffary i n a
country where good fenfe, p o *
litencfs and humanity are the
true chara&eiiflics of the inha.
bitants, for fomo one to repel
the attack, and to tell him, that
however he may plume himfelf
upon his moft extraordinary
performance, he has exhibited
himfelf in a moft ridiculous
point of view—that in the opin.
ion of every judicious perfon his
animadverfive faculties are un
found, and that this proof of
the powers of his mind will ap
pear as the true counterpart G f
his perfon, which is exceedingly
effeminate indeed. But I hear
he has an unconfcionable thirfl
for fcribbling,. infomuch that
upon his arrival at Louifville,
his fuft enquiry was, whether
there was a printing-office in the
place, for that he was mighty
fond of putting pieces in the
papers, and when he was told
there were two, he viewed him
felf with a great deal of felf
complacency, and obferved he
was particularly happy ro hear
it, for fhould one of the papers
I not be big enough to hold all
his productions, 'twas but clap,
ping the balance in t other. Ac
cordingly the public has now
before them his frift—what (hall
I call it ? confound the name,
if it has one, I've forgotten it,
but moft unfortunately for the
DoClor, it [peaks but too plain,
for, from the beginning to the
end cf the chapter, the eternal
burthen of his fong is—quack,
quack, quack; and if he knows
no better how to mix his medi
cine than he has jumbled this
piece together ; horn fuch a
DoCtor good Lord deliver us!
On whatever fide I view the

fhould have thought it natural

to bury all the old women alive;

embargo their tongues; in which
cafe one half the dileafes that

ther with a multitude of ideal

than which nothing could have
a worfe etfeCf upon the praftice

no quefiion that our new prafti
doner is as fond of playing off
his bolufes and catharticks, as
the good old fouls are of com
menting upon the modern rules
