[Without the fpiril of prophecy.)
A very numcious body of men
will be veiy much chagrined
in (be courfe of a few days—
for the following reafons:
t. Because Thomas M'Kean,
after above thirty years of pub
lic and faithful fervice, is a living
evidence that republicans are
not fo ungrateful as they arc
aliened to be by their enemies.
2. Because in the rejed on of
Tames Ro r *, the people of Penn
fylvania have declared their dif
approbation of his public con
duft.
3. Becaufe the whigs will win
more wearing apparel, boots,
and beaver hats than would
clothe a couple of thouLnd of
people.
4. Becaufe large Turns of mo
ney will be won by the whigs
Irom the lories.
A great number of trimmers
in politics who voted for Mr,
Rofs, poGtively declare that
they voted for Mr. M'Kean.
The twenty three publicans
who were deprived of their li
cences for being republicans in a
neighbouring county will have
their licenfes redored.
There will be great animofity
and gnafhing of teeth in public
I and private places— and many
long faces.
In other places there will be
feftivity and congratulation— on
the tiiumphof republican prin-
I ciples.
And it is very poflible there
mav be foma good (inging and
; toa lbng on the occafion.
The democrats in Bate offices

Dear William,
YOU mud remember with
what pain I left you and my
other meffrnates, when preUed
on board the Hermione, then

commanded by Piggott, one of
the greatell biutes that ever dil
graced human nature. There
were at that time a great number
of Americans on board who
were treated in the mod (hock
ing manner, you were arquainr
ed with fome of them, but 1 fear
to mention their n*mes, as pro
bably they wou d be hunted up
by the bloodhounds that put
lued me. 1 new r nothing of the
taking of the (hip until it was
all over. It was a fudden thing,
entirely owing to the barbarity
of our infernal commander.
And were the unfortunate men
who weic prelied to blame, when
they weie continually beat and
abufed ; would not the mod
virtuous man, if he had the leaf!
(park of American fpirit, have
done the fame ?
When I reflefi on the joy I
experienced after the dididles
and dangers I had undergone,
of landing on my native diotc,
and my prclent (ituation, it ap
pears like a dream to me—my
unhappy patents I how much
mud you have difl effed your
felves by giving me a good edu
cation, and how much did 1
promife myfelf in abiding you
in your old age ! But there is a
God above who will aililt them,
although their unfortunate Ton
cannot.
I fear I (hall fuller death,
altho’perfectly innocentof being
concerned in taking the (hip—
yet, as I was on baard, that will
be fuflicient w ith a court-martial
A

crew fhat may he taken.
It has been faid that I am an
Irifhman, hut you know I am
an American—fuppofe I was
horn that country, where is there
brave and better men than the
lri(h ?—Should they be preded,
beat and abided by a fa of raf
cals, and not endeavor to gain
their liberty, or when they have
done it be delivered up to be
(laughlered !—if a man had t n
tered, perhaps he ought to be
delivered up—let the treatment
be ever fo bad—but the treaty
could neverintend a preded man
