Entered at the Post Office at Morgan as second-class mall matter, Morgan. Ga,, Y hiir-dny. May $6,| S08. Hon. Holit. L. Reiner Spoke lion. Robt. L. Berner, the eltouent 'geritiemtui ’from Monroe, addressed over two thirds of the voters of Uals houn'taminty at the courthouse in Morgan last Friday afternoon at 3 'o’clock in behalf of his candidacy for *€?o verier. Sir. Berner proved himsolf as orro of the most effective hhfl forceful -campaign orators in the state, hnd ks a manifestation of their approval, he was liberally applauded by tho audience, who listened attentively throughout. Mr. Berner was brought through ’the country frotti Arlington by Mr. •Ed,'(Wilier, who also 'carried him to •Dawson after his speech was finished. Judge J, -L. Boynton introduced Mr. Berner in h fow well chosen words, and after a few general re¬ marks expressive (it his pleasure at being ablo to address the people of Calhoun upon the issues ot tho cam¬ paign, ho plunged into a discussion of those issues and of the records of himself and apptments bearing nptan Them. Ho claimed that his record was in perfect harmony with the Chicago platform, in speaking upon the silver (queslToti. Ho made a can¬ vass for the Democratic nomination for Congress upon A platform de¬ claring for free silver, in 18112. Ita 1804 he wrote the Democratic state platform upota which Atkinson was elected governor, and that platform contained a distinct declaration for the free and unlimited coinage of silver. Ho has unflinchingly nlot. the enemies of Democracy upon a thou¬ sand stumps in Georgia and defen¬ ded this and other doctrines of tho party. He claimed, howevor, that tho silver question had been elimi¬ nated from this campaign by the election of tho strongest goldbug in Georgia as chairman ot the Demo¬ cratic Executive Committee. lie said that lie is nol flit enemy lo railroads, but insists that they shall obey the constitutional provis¬ ion! against the dostrnitlon of Com¬ petition in transportation, which he declared to be an issue of supreme Importance to the people, and if they elect him Governor ho will seo to it that the railroads form no unholy combinations to deprive) tho people of the beneficent effect of competi¬ tions. He expressed himself as being in favor of exempting church, lodge and school property from tax¬ ation.) and none other, Ciol. Candlet- *1tid Judge Atkinson were arraigned in strong tefims On the position they took on the ques¬ tion of allowing county and munici¬ pal government to eXoinpt the pro¬ perty of manufacturing Corporations from taxation. He reiterates previ¬ ous assertions that no reduction of the ti* rate of the stato is possible without imposing the efficiency of the common school or cutting down the pension fund of the old soldior or his widow. He was opposed to'any policy that would cut off the poor ©hildreu from the benefits of a com¬ mon school education, aud ho would bankrupt the state treasury before he would allow the tottering old vet¬ eran or his widow sent over the bill to the poor house. The speech was enriched through¬ out with gems of eloquence, that elicited applause and the witty sal¬ lies of his two Hpponents, wero very much enjoyed. Those who wore fort anate enough to hear this elo¬ quent gentleman last Friday Will gladly avail themselves of any other opportunity that may conveniently present itself to hear him again. Fuck gets off the humorous side of wars. A man spent thirteen years iri perfecting a gun t hat would pierce a twelve inch steel plate. An ova¬ tion was given him when his task wag Completed. The next day a man invented an armor plate thirteen inches thick. The torpedo boat was considered the most dangerous in¬ strument of naval warfare, but some man soon invented the torpedo boat destroyer. The next thing will be a torpedo, boat destroyer destroyer, and so on the world will go. How futile are the attempts of man to se¬ cure pence by inventing death-deal¬ ing machines. The secret does m t lieif) this direction. The {’nlform Pjtle Col. R. S. IVlcre, of Calvert, T> xas, President of the Omlon Oroworn' Pro- IfeCtiVe Awjociatiou of tifat 8t»te, stopped over ffi'oirr city jestcrday on his way home from Atlanta, where Tie bad been attending a meeting of tire pinners, corn prew-metr’and planters ft) the intercut ot a standard uniform tfpiare hate of cotton hf tin; are.; adopted and recommended try the Maritime Associations and Colton Exchanges of Galveston and N ew Orleans, tho dinners' Association, the Interior Cotton Buyers’ Asstaefati'on and thcTu- torior Compress Association of Texas. An Advertiser reporter finding him in the city looked him np atld'iulerviewed him on the general situation of Texas, and incidentally ou the advantages to be derived from gettiug the cotton planters closely allied, looking to h general im¬ provement for their hottermeut. It seems that under the anspiees ol thisass sociatiou in Texas there has been ar~ 'ranged a grout diversity of the cropR. The farmers have t*een drawn closer to gether for their mutual benefit, and'k great reform in the baliug of colton has resulted, and the barrier heretofore ex¬ isting between the plantsrs and the mercantile interests have been broken down, and they arc uOw working in unison and harmony to seenre a diver sity of crops and the improvement of American cotton baling to the standard size, 24x51 inches. There are too many advantages to t?b (Wived from the adoption of this size bale to be covered in a short interview. He said among other things that the adoption of this uniform hale will not only save the farmers a vast amount 6F money, but it will so improve the present system of bnl’ng cotton, that if at any future time a better system should be introduced the farmers would he in a position to fix llie terms upon which thoy would use it. At the meeting in Atlanta Mr. A, F. Chur¬ chill, of Brunswick, (la., a Urge steam¬ ship Agent said that if he Could he given Cotton pressed in this uniform box, 21* 54 inches, of an average density of forty pounds per Cubic foot, w hich it has been demonstrated could be obtained, he would be willlhg to mr.ke contracts for t ho delivery of cotton from Brunswick to All European points at a reduction in freight rates of 50 per cent, lie statid that the present rate from Brunswick to Liverpool and Bremer, was 05 cents, and thut fdr cotton baled by this standard he would he willing to make contracts iit 32J cents per hundred pounds, thereby creating a saViog to the farmers of the South of $1.67$ pCt bale.—Montgomery Aavertlser, May 15, 1898. laWCrS CUBAN RELIEF euros r v Colic. In the Cuthbert Leader we the following, credited to Eula .Tank son, which'is a very sensible article, and should he carefully read by fair sex of catty years: “Never appear odd to attract no¬ toriety. It will be attributed to the want of good sense. Never appear sloven in your dress. Let the top dress always bo the longest and no lack’of buttons, pins hr hooks and eyes. Let the col-ar kr.tl cuffs he neat and tidy, keep clean and white 'teeth, yoffr hair well dressed, your finger nails pared and Cb-atied. Walk gracefully and do not stoop 'forward. After you do the best y Oil can there is always a lion perched in some dark ebrner to tell a false¬ hood on you. I)o not walk too rapidly, do i.ot swing your arms in walking. Read much that you may be a ready talker. Spell well, other wise your writing will be ridiculous. Never show tempi r in company. If one Insults you let yofar report be calm and dignified, Never show jealously; it is a weakness, and indi¬ cates an unhappy disposition. Nev¬ er speak to any gentleman too highly of another gentleman present. It would show your preference for the other gentleman and mako his post- lion unpleasant. W hen you aie talking td a gentleman do not keep your eyes following some other gen¬ tle man in the room, neither keep an ear open to Another, while you do not hear ht.lf your partner says, and continually you must ask what he said; it is impolite, if not rude. Nev¬ er permit any one to discover your preference for a gentleman. Modesty vVins m'Ore than boldness. If y< u wish to niatry let the man court you and not you the man. Speak kindly Vo all and of all,and make friends with all with whom yob associate. Never misbehave in church or speak dis¬ respectfully of religion; or any of the .services.
