July Id. Insurgents on Wednes-
day, July Ot, ported that the
German gunboat Jrenif, in Subic
bay, refused Spaniards to permit them Z lH to at-

ptly despatched the emimmi R ft -

the matter. Entering .Subic n
the Raleigh opened fire on
forts, w hereupon the drone

The result of tho fire of the
American warship was that the
Spaniards, numbering 500,surren¬
dered everything.
Returning to Manila, t he Irene
explained that she interfered, “In
the cause of humanity,” and of¬
fered to hand over to tho Ameri¬

Another Rowder Mill Explodes.
Dover, N. J. July 12.—An ex¬
plosion at the woiIch of the Ratlin
and Rand Powder Co., in Pomp-
ton Lakes, today killed fifteen
men, among thorn several soldiers
who had been detailed to guard
the works. A short, time ago
there was an explosion which
killed six men.
■Since the outbreak of hostilities
with Spain, Col, Loo, of the third
New Jersey volunteers, and abat-
tallibn of his regirriont have been
stationed at the works to prevent
its destruction by the Spanish.
The cainp of the soldiers hits been
close to the poivder house. The
guard was being maintained as
usual this morning. At 11 o’clock
there Was a terrific explosion
,
which shook the building -and
scut,tered soldiers and employees.
Fifteen men are reported killed,
and many of the soldiers and em-
plojc s had wounds, some quite
serious. The officials of tho poni-
puny at once sent a special train
.from Dover to tho Mills and the
wounded to Patterson for treat¬
ment,. The millitary formed a
fine and stood guard about the
plant and refused to allow anyone
to approach the works.
The names of tho dead and
wounded cannot be ascertained.
The Monitor force had a fine
treat from Mr. Robert McRaniell,
last Saturday. If was a large wa¬
termelon of the the “Jones” va¬
riety. Mr. McDaniell is raising
some fine melons this year.
The seven Spanish wssels ih-
stroyed by Commodore Schley oil
Santiago carried about 2,500 men ;
find this means that a bounty of
$250,001) will be paid to the com¬
manders and crews of the Federal
ships engaged in the fight, It is
a small reward, indeed, for a great
service; hut, after all, tho prize
money counts for nothing in com-
parkon with the nation’s gruti-
tude and the sense of noble pride
arising from the eunsciimsness of j
an importaiit duly grandly per-l 1
