Vancouver, July 20.-—Accord¬ ing to advices brought by the Empress of India from Hong Kong, the chief news of the mo¬ ment is that Manila is ready to surrender. Not that the archbish¬ op and captain general are going voluntarily to capitulate before they are compelled to do so, but the backbone of resistance is un¬ questionably broken, and upon a real show of force and intention to bombard the town, if the offi¬ cials do not give in', the resident Spaniards will haul down the Spanish flag. Intimation's to this effect have been received from many sources. A correspondent at Hong Kong of the Press, writ¬ ing under date of June 23rd, says chief subjects of discussion is Manila, Cavite and the American fleet, the meaning of the presence of fiye German men-of-war and one transport or supply vessel in port. Fighting Each Other? looting in Porto Rico. New York, July 20 .-—A special dispatch from St, Thomas to the Journal reports that a serious riot occurred at Mayaguese, Por¬ to Rico, Sunday, resulting- in the killing of nine persons and the wounding of many others. The Spanish residence of the place attacked the natives, whom they of being American sym- Ipathisers and intending the to UUHited aid the invading ^rrpiV Of j States. - More rioting expected. The Protracted Meeting. Rev. Z. T. Weaver. assisted by Mr. Harry Martin, of Ozark, Ala,, have been conducting.- a series of meetings at the Baptist, church .his week. There is -more deep interest manifested in this, meet¬ ing than there has been in any meetings of like character for sev ¬ eral years past. , . The doors of the church were opened Tuesday night aiid three members accepted. Mr. Geo. Colley joined by letter and Messrs John C, Price and Chas. Adams joined by experience. On . Wed¬ nesday night twenty-two appli¬ cants for membership ■ were ac¬ cepted. Mr. and Mi's. Chas. Smith, joined by letter and the following twenty were received into the church: Tim Hawk, John Everett. Mathis, Walter Book,. T. W. Tinsley, Gisero Mathis, John Wooten, Arden Daniel, Noel Mathis, Mrs. W 0. Lilia .. Thomas, Misses Sallie Tinsley, Hawk, Susie Davis, Bessie Smith, Ellie Mae Wooten, Jeddie Beck, Katie Danlell, Abbie Davis, Minnie Ad¬ ams, Neva Stewart and Estelle Bridges, Rev, Mr. Martin is a sound gospel preacher, and. has tlfc hap¬ py facility.to present the truth in a very forcible manner. Our peo¬ ple are overjoyed to have him, among us. The Monitor’s late coming was due to an accident which befell our.newspaper press near the first of the week. We made an effort to repair it so tho paper could be “run off” on time but failed to do so. The defected parts will be sent to factory for repair imme¬ diately and until it returns the Monitor will be reduced in size, but you can look for it, and look for it to tell you the n-ews as usual. By the way, we must ask our friends to aid us a little financially. Within the- last six weeks we have made a $500 -addi¬ tion to the office without asking anything whatever from ... our friends, and now our treasury is a-“has been,”-and must make a “raise” to pay for the repairs on this broken press. Leary Locals. It has been raining so much and the weather has been so warm that no one has been to town, con¬ sequently news ie scarce this week. Capfc, Boyd returned home Sun¬ day afternoon after a visit to In¬ dian Springs. We saw a great many of the old soldiers get on the train here Monday and Tuesday for Atlanta to attend the Confederate’s Re¬ union, which is in session there this week. Messrs. Geo. Ham¬ mond, Tom Jordan and Chas. Isler also went with them. The last three are taking their sum¬ mer vacation. Howell Whitaker, accompanied by Miss Ellie Mae Wooten, paid Shelimatt a visit Sunday. Ask Ho Well how he likes to drive balk¬ ing horses. Mrs. p. B. Addison and sister, Miss Mamie Wooten, went over father’s home near Edison last Saturday arid returned Monday. Our clever Monitor man was with us a short while Friday. Those attending preaching at Morgan last Sunday from here were: Mesdames. Dixon, Ham¬ mond, Mercer and Griffin; Messrs. Mercer, Hammond, Griffin, Cun¬ ningham, Isler and ye scribe. Mr-. Puirioetli and Miss FJor- 1 neu Beauchamp am visiting the Shot (kins and Bicycles. Stephens is here attend¬ ing to the depot while Goo. Ham¬ mond is away! taking his vacation. Rev. W. 0. Embry is attending the protracted meeting at Edison this week. ' ..Messrs. John Price, Jr., and Benton passed through here Monday afternoon en route to tlieir home in Morgan. They had been iip to Griffin to stand exami¬ nation for the war lmt failed to pass on account of their weight. They report a good time and plenty to eat. They informed us that Noel Melvin was getting $150 per month dancing and “preach¬ ing'” for the boys. M. A. Bunch left Tuesday morning for Atlanta. Rev. King organized tin -Ep- worth League hero second Sunday and elected the following officers: President—-Mrs. Dixon, vice pres¬ ident—Mrs. Addison, Secretary— 'Chas. Plowden, treasurer—Mrs. \Y. F. Bray. There were other officers elected for different com¬ mittees but I have not learned all their names yet. Our ware house is still on a boom. - Our marshal is doing some needed work on the streets this: week. Old Glory Wares. Harbor of Santiago, July 17.—Ex¬ actly at 0 o’clock this morning the Spanish flag \?as lowered from the staff crowningthoheights upon which battered Morro Castle spreads half way The lowering of this emblem of the defunct sovereignty of Spain in this part of the world was witness¬ ed by a few Spanish and American troops on shore, and by the Brooklyn, New York, Vixen and Vesuvius ly. iug within a few hundred yards of the harbor entrance. Almost immediately after the flag was hauled down.: the steam launches commanded by Liautenants Hobson and.Palmer entered the harbor, pene¬ trating as far as - tho firing stations of the-submarine mines. These mines were judged to be not so formidable a.» ; expected, and later in the after¬ noon they were all exploded at tho time of the ontranco of the -Merrimac into tfle harbor, -but it is not thought probable that either of thorn had anything to do with the sinking of the. craft. Six or seven fine steamers in tho harbor fall as prizes. Soon in the afternoon Commodore Schley, with Gapt. Cook of the Brook lyn, Lieut. Sears, Lieut, Wells, and three-invited-correspondents of the Associated Press, went into the liar' bor on steam launch in order to make close observations of the Spanish forts and batteries. Every one expressed satisfaction at the, fact that. Morro Castle was not Ccmelished by bombardment, Capt. Cook saying, “We needed Mono as -an object lesson, and America is rather shy on ruins any¬ how.” " ■ ■ ■> ' • • 1 The old fort stands on a bluff, ter¬ race fashion. From the water’s edge to the brow of beetling cliff there aro huge caves formed by the action of the waves, and around the base and in the superstructure there are not a few caves made by the navy’s projectiles. It would appear, how- ever,- that only one bastian v/as knocked to pieces, while tbo queer little sentry box to the sixteenth Gen¬ try escaped almost intact., Morro Castle is tho only imposing fortification in the harbor, and it is only so in.appearance, since there is not one gun mounted within tho crumbled \valls. In fact, all the bat*- teries. masked and open, dwindled in their teirw-insniring qinditi".- a.- the inspection grew elosar,' Crowning'the'hill on the west side of the entrance wore the famoiis six- inch rapid fire guns froth the Spalls ish cruiser Reitia Mercedes. These were ugly looking and dangerous.' while below 6n the brink of the mountains on the west shoro of the entrance were some Gatling guns. These were the ones whiiih poured such a bitter firednto' the Merrimac. Directly east of Mot’ro, on - the crest of a Cliff, wore six big guns, oho or two of which were dismounted. Tho Estrella battery and a small neighbor further in showed no guns. On the inside of tho slopo and on the hill westward - were some hastily construc¬ ted but very comforting casemates seen, •into which the Spanish gun¬ ners retreated when our ships opened tiro. When the firing' ceased the gnriivcrs only had a few steps to climb to the six'-inch rapid (ire guns, ' 1 At punta-gorda there two 4sinch guns-, one-above the other, neither protected by even sand or earth. These commanded the harbor with-- out-the loss of a single' ship. The mines thighs have stopped 'ingress by sinking the leading ship. But this is chance of war, and isn’t so grave as many taken during civil strife, nor so serious as would have 'been; the sit¬ uation had there been good batteries properly manned in the harbor. City of Silence. Santiago Harbor, July 13th, ■ via Kingston, July 19,-Santiago is now a city of silence. The American flag waves over the military headquarters on Morro’s flag¬ staff, arid Red Cross emblems are as plentiful as church spires. . Almost the entire population is gathered about the. wharves, where the Spanish shipping, now prizes of the. United States, will soon bo aug¬ mented by a large fleet of transports flying ,the American colors. Some stories, mostly for. the salo of liquor or drugs, aro open* hut patrons are few. Beggars are in evidence, of the same importunate sort which makes Havana unpleasant for foreigners. Now and then a man or woitiaii of tho hotter class will beg the eorress pondeiits for f'&ilJt.for my little one, in the nanie-of God.” At the dock where tho Red Cross steamer, tltate of Texas is unloading ...... ......... ^ * >«•*.<•* * t-* from the Ninth infantry has been mounted, but the soldiers have had little trouble except from the inroads of bad boys, indiegonous to seaport cities. ■ . There is no evidence of gloom on the faces of the Spanish men and women. These mureurial people are already laughing and pleased at the nava military and naval show and at tho prospect of getting-. food ■ other than rice and salt.meats. Nearly the bettor class of .houses are olosod. The residents have 'evidently notes* turned from El Cane.y and other suburbs on places to which they fled on the fear of bombardment.
