This is a trite saying, but it is none the lees truthful because trite. Listen to the story which the Philadelphia North American tells of the reward a Milford, Del., woman re- ceived because she advertised. She was a widow, sad and lonely. When the ev* ening shadows fell she looked and longed for the return of the husband of herbos* om, but he came not. And she sat down to a oompaniouiess supper, and the even¬ ings and mornings wore away. Thus it might have gone on forever had not the newspaper—that en^ghteniug and civil¬ izing agency—come to her assistance. She advertised. And why not? She was wasting her charms on a desert household. Many a gem of purest ray serene the dark, unloaded, widowed households bear. Bo she advertised and of the replies there were seven baskets full. But as she only needed one, she exercized care and judgment in the as* sortment ot the replies, and, as a result, there will shortly bo a wedding in Mon¬ tana. In that far off State another “sweeter self'’ was astray—he was, a bachelor, and his heart yearned across the great American desert to the spot where another heart was yearning o» foil time—and with the aid of that Civilising agency Cupid has again scored. The lmchelor has money; tie widow has en porieuce. What more ta needed? May they be happy and instil in their grow¬ ing progeny the maxim that it always pays to advertise. Bucklen’n Arnica Salve. An interesting ease came before a Buf¬ falo court the other day. It was baaed, upon one woman’s remark about anoth¬ er. “She used pads to fill out her figure and make the boys think she is a stun* nnr,” the defendant is alleged to have said of the plaintiff. The law presumes a defendant to bo innocent until proved guilty. Tbeonusof the burden of proof, therefore, wim upon the plaintiff to show that aha did not use pads, and that the defendant had slandered her. Ths jury was largely composed of uumarried men, Whose ignorance of feminiuine make-ups peculiarly fitted them for rendering im¬ partial judgment. After voluminous testimony, vigorous cross examinations |and many explanations, the jury return¬ ed a sealed verdict. A Narrow Escape. Thankful words written by Mrs, Ada E. Hart, of Groton S. The man who waits fqr things to turn up genet ally gets so laay that he is asleep when anything is turned up. Some of om- South Georgia dudes could never get married if they Ilyed in the Philippines. The proachers charge a thirty dollar marriage fee. Stewart Short says ha knows a girl who can keep a secret, but that he will not risk his reputation for veracity by saying she can keep— quiet. They do say liiat a Morgan boy (ahd it has just leaked out) who went to Albany recently burned up a box of matches trying to light an electric light and then wanted to whip the hotel clerk because there was “no He in the dodgasted thing.” Nathan Cartledge says if Hobson is in need any more “wind bags” to raise the Cristobal Colon, he can fur¬ nish the Lieutenant with somesplon- did specimens developed by the re~' cent political campaigns, ----- ■ ■ A Kansas girl has brought suit against her pastor for kissing her, Al¬ leging that the kiss W’as co cold that it made her shiver. Our South Georgia preachers will take warning, and try to throw mors wnrmpth into their osculatory performances. The Monitor force Is indebted to Mr. W. T. Gladden for a couple of stalks of delicious sugar cane. Mr. Gladden is one of southwest Geor¬ gia’s most progressive farmers, livs itig about ten miles from Morgan on the Outhbert road. iThen Abraham Lincoln was once asked how long a man’s let 8 ought to be, ho answered “long enough to reach from bis body to tho ground.” But, undeniably, that depends. Sup¬ pose the man Is a murderer and un- det due process of law you ate hang¬ ing him; in that case his legs are quite long enough, though too short to touch tho ground from Ins body. A philosopher says; “If wives were as good to their husbands as female clerks are to their male CUK- tomers but few matrimonial failures would bo recorded.” We don’t be¬ lieve that, for nine women out of ten are even nicer to their husbands thau that, The above philosopher must be a crusty old bachelor, or a terribly henpecked CURS. ur When . you drop a small object on the floor look Indian’ and you are sure to and it says the Philadelphia budget which thus describes tho method; “Somebody dropped a stick pin in the hall the other day and had hard work to find it. -She hunted high ana law, and on her hands and knees, and with a candle but it was •M no use. The pin was very tiny, its value being duo to association rather thau to siae or brilliancy. The somobody, after a final shake of the tugs, was about to give it up forever, when oub of the children chanced to come along. “Why don’t you ‘look Indian’ foi it?' he asked. Before the somobody realised what was meant, down dropped the youngster on the floor, his head find his whole body lying sidewise and just as close to the dead level as possible. In this position his eyes roVed rapidly over the floor, ‘I have it!’ he shouted, and sure enough, right in the middle of the floor, in co plain a placo that it had escaped the notice, W33 the missing stickpin. The youngster then explained that ‘looking Indian’ meant putting the head to the ground In order to catch sight of the smaller objects between oneself and the horiion. ■ ‘They do it oh the plains all the titne,’ he said. “That’s why they can tell who’s coming. But it work* in houses just S 3 well as on the plains. Why, we never lose anything in the nursery nowa* days; wejust ‘look Indian’ and find it right off.” The Nupe La GHppe Cure.
