Notice to Teachers.
There will be a meeting of the
Ualhoun County Teachers’ Associa¬
tion at the court bouse in Morgan.
Saturday, October the 29th, at 10
o’clock a. m. The purpose of this
meeting is to elect now officers and
to outline the work for the ensuing
year. This is an important meeting
and every tea'cher in Calhoun county
is earnestly requested to attend.
We have had some interesting and
prof table meetings this year, and
we hope that these monthly meet¬
ings will not only be kept ups, but
also, that they will grow in interest
rind helpfulness to each teacher.
This association can and ought to
be made a very potent factor in
raising the standard of teaching in
■our county. Bet each teacher come
prepared to offer suggestions on the
tine of work to be pursued.
R, H. Shell, President,

It is nicer to be a widow than an
old maid, and a girl in love should
not hesitate to marry a man who is
going to the war and may not come
back.
The Congressional Election takes
place on Tuesday, the 8th of Novem¬
ber, and remember it is your duty
•as a loyal Democrat to vote for your
party nomine?, Judge A M. Griggs.
Remember the date.
The Monitor’s _ld correspondent,
Substitute, evidently thought that,
by the absence of Sunflowers in last
week’s paper, they had quit writing
anq we have a letter from both of
them this woek, which aro interest¬
ing and newsy. We hope that both
writers will continue.
Arlington celebrated the complo
tion of the Georgia Pine railroad last
Tuesday by giving a big barbecue,
Judge J. M. Griggs was the leading
orator of the occasion. He spoke to
about 1C00 people. It was not our
good fortune to be present but we
understand that Arlington had fully
1500 visitors within her gates* and
everybody had a glorious time.
Through au oversight last week
•the proceedings of the Couuty
Board were left out. Only a small
amount of orders were issued. At
the conclusion of the session Couuty
Commissioner John M. Wooten
tendered his resignation to the Board
and recommended Mr. A. J. Dixon,
of Leary to fill his uuexpired term,
Mr. Wooten’s resignation was ac¬
cepted and Mr. Dixon was unani¬
mously elected to fill the unexpired
vacancy.
Last Sunday night about 10 o’clock
the barn on Mr. John Price’s place
near Williamsburg very mysterious¬
ly fell, nearly killing one mule that
happened to bo under It at the time,
and wounding one or two more.
The fall of the barn is a mystery to
Mr. Price as well as the hands on
the place, there being no wind blow¬
ing at the time. Tko posts which
were large hewn pino posts, support-
ing the structure were wrung lu
near the grouuu and the
building a as a complete wreck
There were twelve or lifted mules
iu the lot at the time the barn fell

Big Fire m Blakely.
Last Wednesday morning at 3:30
o’clock tiVe was discovered in the
dry goods and clothing store of Sam
Stein in Blakely. The Haines spread
rapidly to the stores of K. W. Davis,
Isaac Stein and Mrs. R. U. Smith,
which were completely burned
down without saving a dollars worth
of goods. 1 he estimated loss is
placed at $27,000. The origin of
the fire is unknown.
This is the same block that was
destroyed by fire three years ago.
The fire is a heavy loss to the town.
TAKE NOTICE.
Parties indebted to me are hereby
requested to call and settle at once

We Have Observed.
That the Caban flag is not as pop¬
ular as it was when the war began.
That people whose hearts ana
hands are clean are seldom suspi¬
cious.
That when a horse ora man makes
up his mind to pull he always quits
kicking,
That when a pastor begins talking
of resigning, he might as well quit at
once.
That when a man begins to con¬
template a change of church rela¬
tions, he suddenly* discovers tenden¬
cies to a wholesale exodus.
That a uniform in itself does not
make a man a military* hero, nor does
a church membership constitute one
a devout moral hero.
Thai it is a good deal easier to dis¬
cover weak places than it is to
strengthen them—and this is nocu*.
liarly true in churches.
That the stingiest churches are
tbo ones that complain the most be¬
cause there are too many collections
that never increase.the pastor’s sal¬
ary.
That there are few people who can
not be led further than they dan be
driven, a fact worth noticing by
those who have to deal with disobe¬
dient church members.
A society writer in a big city daily
truly says: “It is a foolish girl who
marries a man to reform him. Sweet¬
hearts reform very few men and

is a man who has never needed to bo
reformed at all, but lias always been
upright in his lire.”
A man’s life was saved by a chew
of tobacco in New York state the
other day. He was chowing at the
time ho fell over board from a skiff.
The quid of tobacco lodged in his
throat and prevented him from swal¬
lowing water. He was fished out
and relieved of the tobacco stopper
and except for the wetting, and a lit¬
tle coughing spoil was none the
worse for the experience. Tho man-
ufacturers of tho brand of tobacco ho
was chewing will probably now ad¬
vertise it as a life preserver.—Savan-

A poor young man is worth compar¬

A man is not really valuable to the

The clock is the invention of Mr.

If a person wants to get up at 3:30 o’clock
in the morning, all that is necessary is
to set the alarm on the clock for that
hour and adjust the light and fire at¬

In this day and generation, shell
items as the following, which was

The fact that southern farmers, says

something to do with the small amottt of

loaned the South something like thirty
