NOTE OF THANKS
When the barbed arrow of grief
has pierced the human heart none but
true and sympathetic friends can
pour into the awful wound the oil
of healing. Sympathy born of love
is a sunburst of subdued joy that
gradually dispells the dark shadows
and slowly lifts the clouds of sor
row. We never thoroughly realized
the value of love and sweet sympathy
till the hour of sore bereavement.
In times of severe trial and uncon
trolable grief through which we have
to pass, words are paltry and human
speech powerless to express the grate
ful appreciation we feel of the many
gracious and tender and loving min
istrations of our dear friends in the
recent illness and death of our dear
Mother.

THE MARIETTA JOURNAL
ST. JAMES CHURCH NEWS |
On Christmas eve the school trée
was beautiful and much enjoyed by
everyone, especially the singing of
the children. Short, but interesting
talks, were made by the rector, Mr.
Willingham and Mr. Lawrence.
Christmas -day the congregation
seemed to have been prompted with
with one accord to gather for a serv
ice of worship, praise and thanks
giving in memory of the birthday
of our Saviour. There were more
than on recent Sundays, and per
haps all were present except those
detained at home by illness.
Unless many people be sick, the re
cent Sunday congregations do not re
flect much sense of the duty or of
the love of worship among Christians.
Many faces are absent for weeks,
and some even months at a time.
Thanks for peace is evidently not
being expressed through the public
worship of Almighty God; for in num
ber the congregations are about half
what they were before the war. And
of course any one of us can easily
find splendid reasons for not doing
anything that we do not much desire
to do; just as we can find equally as
good reasons for doing anything that
we much desire to do.
One who truly believes that God
is a vital force and a personal power
in our life must feel distressed and
see disaster ahead. God, our Father,
is a reality or He is not; Christ, our
Saviour, is a vital fact or He is not.
Certainly there is no room for in
difference: if strong, we are naturally
strongly for or strongly against. The
Christian family is threatened; the
Lord’s Day is no longer the Lord’s
Day; the Christian soldier’s strong
character is giving place to the good
natured, easy-going, harmless man
(7). It is surely wise to face facts
and conditions as they are. And
conditions are about the same in all
the churches. Has patriotism ab
sorbed Christianity?
But there must be a remedy? Yes,
and it is for each man to prove his
Christian manhood by showing his
colors, and using his influence for
the cause of Christ. And we might
begin by asking ourselves the ques
tion: “What excuse is there for God
to permit me to live and enjoy life
and the world?”
The Woman’s Auxiliary meets in
the chapel behind the church Mon
day at 3:00 p. m. All the women
of the parish are asked to come that
they may decide whether or not it is
their desire to participate in govern
ing bodies of the church.
