Remarkable Progress Recorded At
End Of First Month In Organing
: State For Movement
By LOUIE D. NEWTON
Director Publicity
The first lay in the Baptist 756 Mil
lion Campaign was marked by the
ging of the month of August. The
es smade in this first menth of
| work isideclared by Dr." Scar
borough, the director general, and by
Dr. Cree, the ‘Georgia. director, to be
more than they-had expected-or could
have wished for. .
The work of organizing the more
than three hubdred thousand ‘white
Baptists in Gedrgia for the great task
of subscribing: a! tenth of the total
amount of the seventy-five millions
of dollars wal.started about the first{
of ‘August. Duging the month the
entire state has been covered by the
organization and every assoeciation af-
Tiliated with the Georgia Baptist Con
ventin is now in line with the big plan
of systematzing 'all contributions to
the purposes of/the Kingdom. |
Dr. Cree states that this is an ac
complishment of results that should
gr:‘fi’luy every Baptist in the state.
,Wi’ this begining and with three
mo yet to_complete the plans, he:
believes that Georgia. is’ going to be{
dy for a successful drive during
the; week of actual canvass which is
from November 30 to Deeémber 7.
ast Sunday marked a big day in
the progress of the campalgn due to
the m&mday meetings which were
held in every partiof the state. Spe
cial speakers, sixty-seven in number,
were sent to the various big gather
nigs and presented the campaign. -
The associations are now meeting
in every part of the state and the cam
paign officials have a plan of sending
two strong speakers to every associa
tional meeting and of. asking for .a
whole day to present the movement.
This is going to be one of the signi
ficant approaches to the mass of peo
ple. " !
: Dr. John D. Mell, of Athens, presi
dent of the Georgia Baptist Conven
tion, state that he believes the asso~
ciational meetings will afford the best
opportunity to reach the people.. Fol
lewing these meetings the same appeal
will be taken to the local churches by
special speakers to be known as the
Baptist Four-Minute Speakers.
~ An extensive program of publicity
in the form of posters and folders
‘23 just now taking form. The com
mittee of boosters for each church
will handle the local publicity matter
and the Atlanta office is waiting for
the appointment of the committee to
supply every church in the state with
this convincing publicity matter. g
The most attractive poster that has
been printed for the campaign will
go int othe mails this week. "It is
called, “Lifting the World into. the
Light.” It is the suggestion of the
hands of Jesus lifting the world into
the light of His truth.
The month of September is to be
known as Intercession Month. Special
days of prayer will be observed, par
ticularly Wednesday, September 24.
The leaders of the campaign feel very
definitely the importance of interces
sion and it is believed that it will re
sult in unanticipated progress in the
camjaign.
As the campaign develos during the
fall there is one outstand feature and
that is the big meeting of the Georgia
Baptist Convention at Macon, where
it is the hope of the leaders that an
unprecedented number of Baptists
will gather for the purpose of hear
ing such leaders as Dr. George W.
Truett and Dr. Scarborough present
the appeal of the campaign.
“I am gretaly pleased with the out
look, and I wish to express my ap
preciation to everyone who is helping
to make possible this great work
stated Dr. Cree a few days ago.

MORE JELLY WITH LESS e
FRUIT AND SUGAR
To obtain the largest possible
amount of jelly from fruit with the
use of the smallest possible amount
of sugar, follow the directions given
below by United States Department
of Agriculture specialjsts:
If a good jelly making fruit, such
as Quince,. green grapes tart and
partly ripe apples, Siberian crabs, or
cranberries, is being used, make a
second extraction from the fruit. That
is, take the pulp from the jelly bag,
add one cup of water to each pound
of pulp, cook wtenty minutes, and
drip a second time, using some pres
sure at the last. Second-extraction
jellies are likely to be some what dif
ferent from the first and it is an ex
cellent plan to combine the two juices
before sweetening.
When fruit is cheap and sugar ex
‘pensive, jellies may be made to ad
vantage with one-half as much sweet
ening as usual, that is, with one-half
cup of sugar to one cup of juice. The
yield of jelly will be less, for one cup
of sugar should make between one
and one and one-half cups of jelly,‘
whereas one-half cup of sugar plus
one cup of juice makes between one
half cup and three-fourths cup of
jelly.
One-half of the sweetening may be
glucose sirup, light-colored corn sirup,
honey, or sorghum sirup. Jlf the oth
er half is granulated sugar, there
will be litle noticeable difference in
sweetness in most cases., Grape with
glucose or corn sirup will make a good
jelly even when no sugar is used.
“COLD WATER” PAINT
A farmer asks our opinion about
the advisibility of using cold water
paint on the outside of his farm build:
ings. «Cold water paint is in the na
ture of calcimine and may do all right
for.inside work but will give very-lit
tle protection against the weather.
One of - the pringiple advantages of
oil ‘pain is that the oil penetrates the
wood. and preserves it, which is not
true of cold water paint.—The Pro
gressive Farmer.
