MACLAND.
Our community was shocked Sat
urday morning when the news came
that Mr. Geo. M. McElreath had sud
denly passed away early in the night
Friday. Mr. McElreath was 68
years of age and had lived here all
his Jife. H 4 joined the Methodist
church in his young manhood and
was always a true and faithful mem
ber, loyal to his pastor and church.
He was quiet in disposition, always
looked deeply into matters of inter
est to his church and community,
then stood for what was right, re
gardless of what others thought.
The last few years of his life he
‘was in feeble health, but was always
‘cheerful and looked on the bright
side of life. Only a short time ago
he was heard to remark while dis
cussing the progress and failures of
life, that after all the religion of the
Lord Jesus Christ is all there is. He
had the honor of representing his
county in the legislature several
yvears ago and had held the office of
J. P. for a number of years. He
also held most all the offices in his
church and his death removes one of
the pillars of the church at this
place. He was one of the most de
voted fathers we have ever seen, and
his children loved him as only child
ren can love a true father. His in
terest in his wife and children and
his devotion to them was something
remarkablee. We have often looked
at this family and remarked that
they were the happiest family we
ever saw. He was wvery much de
-Ivotcd to his wife, who was Miss Lou
Mayes before their marriage. For
more than forty years they had walk
ed hand and heart together, until
they reared nine children. Their
eldest daughter, Miss Edna_ died sev
eral years ago, and their youngest
son, Ray, died a few years ago.
There are seven children living;
Misses Annie and Addie McElreath
of this place; Miss Mary McElreath
of Washington, D. C.; Messrs. Frank
and Howard McElreath of this place,
Guss of South Carclina and Ben of
Savannah, all of whom attended the
funeral, which ‘was held at Macland
Sunday afternoon at three o’clock.
Rev. J. A. Grey and Rev. A. J. Mor
ean conducted the ceremony. One of
the largest crowds we ever saw at
tended, which attests the high esteem
in which he and his family are held.
“The Home of the Soul,” The Un
clouded Day” and several other ap
propriate songs were sung by the
choir. Mrs F. N. Camp presided at
the organ. The floral tributes were
many and very® beautiful.
The family have the sympathy of
many loving friends in this sad hour.
Mr. Sylvester Beaver and family
are visiting at Blue Ridge this week.
+Miss Ruth Kemp of Madison is vis
