Expression That Is Considered Slight.
ly Vulgar Today Traced to
Poet Cowper.
Some of the crudest expressions in
the English tongue had their origin
in poetry, and even religious com
mands. Among these the phrase, “to
g 0 the whole hog,” is a striking ex
ample. Today it is looked upon as
a vulgarism. Yet the words were ob
tained directly from, a poem by Cow
per, whose title is the pretty term,
“Love of the World Reproved.” The
poem is the versifying of an Arabian
story that seems well founded In fact.
- Mohammed in giving forth his laws
declared that a certain part of the pig
should not be eaten, but he forgot to
mention just what part it was that
he theught unclean. His followers, to
make sure of not violating his com
mands, debarred the whole pig. As
there were many, however, who were
dearly fond of pork, they met ahd
agreed that one would eat the steaks,
one the chops, one the feet, and so on,
until the whole pig had been eaten,
and thus but one of the feasters could
be made to suffer for the sin. As Cow
ver says: “They thought it hard from
ithe whole pig to be debarred,” and
adds: “With sophistry, their sauce
they sweeten, till quite from tail to
snout, 'tis eaten.”

How Discovery of Prolific Gold Field
Was Made in 'Mysore, State
of India, '
One of the world’'s most prolific gold
fields at the present time is in the
Kolar district (Mysore state) of India.
Discovery of it was made in a curious
way.
In prosperous years, when the gods
favored the valley with an ample har
vest of rice, grains of gold were found
now and then on rice ears. This great
ly mystified the natives, who ascribed
the gold to supernatural powers,
What probably happened was that
these grains, derived from the gravelly
soll, lodged on the young rice plants
when they were being gro¥n in nur
series (for subsequent transplantation
to the fields) and flooded at intervals
with water.
The strange occurrence, at first
deemed supernatural, led to the discov
ery that the gravels of the valley were
rich in gold, brought down from the
mountaing. Since then the Kolar dis
trict has contributed largely to the
world’s supply of the yellow metal.

THE story of hats that are worn
by school girls is brief this sea
son and its main peints may be gath
ered very quickly from the group of
hats shown here. There sprung up be
fore school bells began to ring a de
mand for tams, that included those
for school girls but was not ‘by any
means confined to them. In answer
to this call came tams and more tams.
One would not believe so great a vari
ety in one kind of hat could je made,
and the school girl found in them ex
actly the things she liked, These tams
are made of various kinds of cloth
having a shaggy, velvety or suede
like surface, and are finished off wti
yarn pompons, yarn or silk tdssels
or are without any ornament. There
are some velvet models among them.
Two pretty tams shown in the ple
ture bring out the differences that
appear in the construction of the tam.
The hat at the left has a crown made
of sections of shaggy cloth sewed to-

els shown here are commended to the
home dressmaker. They are made of
wool * jersey—that handsome and un
mussable fabric that is so strongly in
trenched in the esteerp of women. FThe
one-piece frock at the left has cuffs
and collar, also facings of the plaits
at the side, made of duvetyn in a con
trasting color. The collar and cuffs
are ornamented with needle-work in
heavy silk floss. In color combina
tion and in needle-work design there
are opportunities for use of individual
taste. The other frock has a plain
skirt and overblouse with yarn em
broidery in two colors used for dec
oration. The girdle is made of yarn
also and may be braided or crocheted.
Blouses of this kind are prettily trim
med with flowers crocheted of yarn
and sewed on, their foliage and stems
simulated in simple stitches in yarn
on the blouse. !

made of only two pieces, one of them
so arranged that the tam flares off the
face and falls to the right side,
The hats in the center of the group
and at the lower left hand corner
are popular felt shapes finished with
bands of grosgrain ribbon. They are
made in a variety of good colors, are
very durable and “classy.” The re
maining hat is less simple, having a
draped crown of duvetyn and a turned
‘up brim of angora cloth, Two yarn
\balls suspénded on a crocheted cord
‘that hangs from two loops complete
this ambitious affair for the young
miss.
