Entertainment For
Miss Gardner. (i
A beautiful agxd interesting affair
of last week was the entertainment
given by the Woman’s Missionary So
ciety of the Presbyterian Church,
on Tuesday afternoon, in honor of
Miss Emma Gardner, who leaves this
week for Japan, where she goes to
engage in mission work. The Society
counts the going of Miss Gardner as
the most important event that has
happened in their Church life, and the
members took this- opportunity to
wish her success in her chosen field.
An interesting program had been
arranged for the first part of the af
ternoon, which was follbwed by an
informal reception. 3
Mrs. Arthur Davenport presided
over the meeting which was held in
the Sunday School room of the
church, and Mrs. Sylvester led the
devotional: Miss Mable Cortelyou,
who had .charge of the programme,
gave a delightful talk on “Japanese
Home Life and Customs,” after
which Mrs. C. D. Eder sang a Japan
ese hymn, “The. Call of Japan.”
During the meeting, Miss Gard
ner, who had place of honor, was seat
ed in a carved treak-wuod chair, in
front of a large Japanese screen of
teak-wood and ivory. Against the
screen, Oriental jars and vases, filled
with quantities of bright hued sum
mer flowers, were placed. A num
ber of little girls, in fanciful Japan
ese costume were grouped around
Miss Gardner, the whole making a
most attractive and colorful picture.
These little girls, Weldon Sibley,
Yrma Dawn Hancock, Jane Northcutt,
Emily Haynes, Julia and Mary Linda
Abbott, Annie Louise Comfort,
Charme Shippen, Eliza Holmes and
Cynthia Chappell, of Columbus, serv
ed an ice course during the social
hour.
The guests, who included the mem
bers of the Presbyterian Missionary
Society and the officials of the mis
sionary societies of the other denom-‘
inations in town, numbered about
one nundred.
Mrs. W. C. Humphries, of Acworth,
president of the Cherokee Presbyter
ial, was also present. :

Walker-McWhorter
The most cordial interest through
out the south centers in the announce
ment today of the engagement of
Miss Louise Walker, of Monroe, to
Mr. Robert Ligon McWhorter, of Ath
ens. Both young people are descend
ants of distinguished and prominent
old southern families. The marriage
will be a beautiful social event of
the early fall, taking place in Mon
roe.
Miss Walker is the youngest daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Billington San
ders Walker, of Monroe, and sister
of Hon. Clifford Walker, of Monroe,
Mrs. Frank Harrell, of Americus;
Mrs. Handpton Field, of Cartersville;
Mrs. J. B. McCrary and Mrs. Paul
Voss, of Atlanta.
Miss Walker is a talented young
woman possessing a charming per
sanality which has endeared her to
many. She is an alumna of, Luecy|
Cobb institute in Athens and the “Cas—l
tle on the Hudson” in New York,
where she was prominent in school
activities. Miss Walker has been a
greatly feted belle on her frequent
visits to Atlanta as the guest of her
sisters and of Mrs. Glenville Gidd~ings,‘
who was formerly Miss Dorethy Ark-|
wright.
Mr. McWhorter is the sen of Judge
and Mrs. Hamilton McWhorter, of
Athens. He graduated from the Uni
versity of Georgia with a degree of
Bachelor of Arts, and from the Uni
versity of Virginia with a degree of
Bechelor of Laws. He is a memberl
of the Chi Chij fraternity, Phi Beta |
Kappa, Sphinx and many other col-i
lege organizations. Mr. M?cWhorteri
is one of the most famous atheletes}
in the south, having played four years
on the baseball and football teams
at the University of Georgia and!
Was captain of both teams.
. At the beginning of the World war‘
he entered the First Officer’s Train
ing Camp at Fort McPherson, where
he won a captaincy and was later
stationed at Camp Gordon for sever
al months, |
Mr. McWhorter and his bride will
reside in Athens, where he is success
fully engaged in the mercantile bus

For Miss Gardner.
Miss Mabel Cortelyou entertained
on Saturday afternoon at an informal
tea in honor of Miss Emma Gardner.
Shasta daisies, zinnias and gladi
olas in vases and baskets, wers the
flowers used to decorate the rooms
in which the guests were assembled.
A group of lovely, colored photo
graphs, of Japanese - cherry-trees in
bloom, wisteria-blossoms and Shinto
temples, brought from Japan by Mrs,
George H. Keeler, were the occasion
of much enjoyment to the guests.
An ice course was served during
the afternoon.

at a delightful swimming party on
Tuesday aftednoon at the Golf Club,
in honor of Miss Frances Forrest
Smith, the attractive young daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. N. K. Smith, who
has just returned from the summer
school at G. N. L i Milledgeville,
and Mr. Jesse Hankinson, of Biloxi.
Miss., who is spending the summer

After enjoying swimming at the
Club, the party went to “El Sitio,”

where they enjoyed a delightful pic
nic lunch.

'Schilling, the marriage to be an event

Miss Marillon, the only daughter,
of Mrs. Mecllhenny is a Parisian by
birth, having come to this country|
seven years ago. She is a lovely
young girl of the brunette type. ‘
She attended school in Paris and
is a graduate of Miss Wright’c school,
in New Orleans. :
Mr. Schilling is the son of Mr. F.
E. A. Schilling. |
When the United States entered the
war, he volunteered his services, serv
ing in France nearly three years, in
the Aviation Corps. Since receiving
his honorable discharge, he has been
| prominently identified in the business
Iworld, beng president of the Atlanta
Sheet Metal Works.
Mr. Schilling and his bride - elect
will reside, after their marriage, in

Friday evening.

An interesting visitor to Marietta,
last week, was M. Fletcher Pierce, U.
S. N., who was the guest of his rel

D. C. Cole and Mrs. A. A. Fletcher.
Mr. Pierce has just returned from a
seven months’ cruise to Samoa. He
sailed from Newport News on the
ammunition, vessel, Nero, and went
thru the canal, touching at San Fran
cisco, and other cities on the Pacific
Coast, and thence to the Samoan Is
lands. Mpr. Pierce gives a most en
tertaining account of the voyage.
Mr. J. W. Petty and son, Campbell,
have returned from a trip to points
in Florida. :
Mr. George W. Green left last week
for a three months’ business trip
to Oklahoma City.
The Marietta friends of Mrs. Char
les Oliphant, of Chicago, will be in
terested to learn that she sailed on
Tuesday of last week, fromi New
York, for Paris. She will visit all
the principal cities of Europe, going
by air-plane, from Paris to London.
Mrs. Oliphant has many friends here,
made on visits to her sister, Mrs. Pi
erre Camblos.
Mrs. Loring Raoul entertained the
Tuesday Bridge Club last week, in
viting Mrs. Howell Trezevant to
meet with the members.
Miss Irene Mayes has returned
from a visit to Mrs. Anna Sunimers,
in Baltimore, Md. :
Mrs. W. A. Sams and son, Walter,
have returned from a motor trip to
Brevard, N. C. Mrs. Sams’ mother,
Mrs. A. M. Dobbs, and brother, Mr. J.
P. Dobbs, of Athens, accompanied
them to Brevard, where Mrs. Sams
placed her younger son, Albert, in
French Broad Camp for boys, where
he will spend the month of August.

their home in Maryville, Tenn., after
a visit to Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Mell.

from Gadsden, Ala.,having gone there
last week to attend the funeral of

OBITUARIES.
MRS. MATTIE GIBSON
Mrs. Mattie Gibson, 71 years of
age, died Saturday July 9th, at Mari
etta.
The funeral services were tonduc
ted at Salem Camp Ground, Forsyth
county, Rev. Dr. Wood officiating.
Interment was in the church yard.
Mrs. Gibsgon is survived by her hus
band, J. F. Gibson. :
DEATH OF INFANT :
The infant daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. D. A. Brown, of Marietta, died
July 10. The funeral services were
conducted at the grave side by Dr.
Hammond.
Interment was in City cemetery
The child is survived by its parents,
Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Brown.
MRS. MARY EDWARDS
Mrs. Mary Edwards, 71 years of
age, died at Spartanburg, S. C,
Friday, July Bth. :
The funeral services were conduc
ted at Mt. Bethel church Sunday,
July 10, Rev. Dr. Chambers officia
ting. Interment in church yard.
Mrs. Edwards is survived by two
daughters and one son.
