The Matter Is Settled.
The election is on and by the time the Journal
woes to -[iress the matter of a one man commission
~will be settled. : '
The Journal took a stand at the first and’ re
smained firm, it believed the one man commission
-aould be the best for the county at this time. If
‘mof, the people have a right to say so and their ver
ahet will suit the Journal.
The Journal has tried to deal fairly wjth all sides.
‘Not one single line of matter against the bill has
‘been omitted from our columns and we have not
-«harged one cent for publishing any article that
«eame to our office expressing any man’s opinion
against the bill, '
What is best for Cobb county as a whole is best
For the Journal, we have stated before, and we are

WINTER COVER CROPS
FOR GREEN MANURING
By E. 0. McMAHAN, County Agent
“‘CATCH THE NITROGEN: Nitro

Yeaches out of the soil in the South
all thru the balmy winter. Catch it
with clover, rye, vetch and oats. Let
he winter cover crops spread their
wet of roots and trap the escaping
plang food, absorb and convert it into
plant growth.
If nitrogen is not utilized by a
growing crop as soon as it becomes
wraber soluable in the soil, then there
i danger that the rains will wash it
out and away to the streams, and
whem this occurs, it is lost to agri
wutitavre. o
STOP EROSION LOSS: When the
ground is carpeted with a growing
«rep, it absorbs rain fall and thus
«fwecks surface washing. The cream
waf the soil is its surface. Let the
mwins wash at will on the slopes and

the best of the soil’s fertility will
soon be lost.
GET ORGANIC MATTER: The
greatest need of southern soils
is organic matter. The cheapest
way to get it is to grow it. Winter
cover crops afford one of the eco
2iomical means for growins} green
manure to produce organic matter,
for the reason that they occupy the
lanl when otherwise it would be idle,
and they utilize nitrogen that cther
wise would be lost thru leaching and
erosion. A cover crop can be turned
under in time to be followed by corn,
cotton and other summer-growing
crops; and furthermore, much of the
lant food in the green manure will
be available for the summer ecrops.
Vetch.
‘Vetch is a winter legume of gener
al adaptability to the South, but it
is usually grown as a comrpanion crop
of oats for spring hay. Hairy vetch
is'the hardiest and easiest grown un
der the conditions that prevail in
Cobb county. English or Oregon
vetch grows more erect, matures ear-
The calendar says that’ fali had its official open- l
ing yesterday. The weather man agrees perfectly.
The amount of cotton seen upon Marietta streets
Saturday lends the complete backing of the agricul
turists to both of the above authorities: But ‘‘old
man hot--weather” refuses to accept even so unani
mous a verdiet. Its three against one and so far
the ‘“lone fighter’’ seems to be getting the best of
the breaks. ;
““Fatty’’ Arbuckle is entitled to suspended con
demnation on the part of the American people until
his case has been properly disposed of in court. To
debar his pictures before he has been given a fair
trial is both foolish and unjust. Should it develop
that he is innocent the American people will have
committed a serious wrong against him if they per
sist in their present efforts to debar his pietures
upon the grounds of assumed guilt. If he is proven
guilty it will then be time to ostracise him from the
realm of shadowland. The theory of American law
is that every person is considered innocent until
proven guilty. To aect’in a contrary manner is to
foster mob psychology and is often’the real origin
of lynching and outlawry.. &
Someone is credited with making the announce
ment that the present genuine summer weather is
the result of unusually large spots on the sun eau-s
ing it to throw off more than the ordinary amount
of heat. If our feelings are of-any value in determ
inng causes we would say ‘“not a mere spot, but
the whoe side of the sun must be afflicted.’”” And at
that we are no pessimist.
'ier and under favorable conditions
vields as heavily as hairy vetch, but
t is easier winter killed and does
not do so well on light soils as hairy
vetch .
Vetch, like other winter legumes,
not only catches the nitrogen of the
soil that becomes water soluable and
would leach out, but it has the pow-l
er thry the nitrogen fixing bacteria
in the nodules on its roots of con
verting the nitrogen of the air into
a form that can be used by the
plant, thus converting it into plant
growth which when turned under in
the spring will greatly increase .the
supply of nitrogen for succeeding
crops.
A ton of hairy vetcH hay containe
about 50 pounds of nitrogen while
the roots and stubble including the
nodules contain approximately one
fourth as much more. This makes a
total yield of 62.5 pounds (from one
fourth to three-fourth of which prob
ably comes from the air) which is
equal to the nitrogen in 417 pongldl
of nitrate of soda. ¥ 4
