Increased Salaries for Teachers
t is seldom that a more timely act, or one more
highly calculated to further the general progress and
welfare of the county as a whole, has been under
taken by any group or set of Cobb county officials
than fhat of the county board of education at its last
session when it moved to increase the salaries of all
yrades of teachers in the publie rural schools.
There is nothing more essential in the life of
public undertakings than that of the education of
the boys and girls. Children in the hands of poorly
paid teachers, means, as a rule, children in the hands
of incompetent teachers which in turn means chil
dren turned loose upon society incompetent to prop
erly fight the battle of life. The loss of this to a
city or county is incomparably .more than any
amount of increased expenditures in the shape of
higher salaries to teachers.,
It is a notorious fact thaf teachers in the rural‘
schools of Georgia have long been among the poor
est paid in the United States, and it must be said,
however regretfully, that the rural teachers of Cobb
have certainly not been among even the highest paid
of Georgia rural teachers. The result has been one
of the fundamental causes in keeping illiteracy in
the county and state among the highest of any civ
ilized section of the globe.
Most rural teachers in both the county and state
have always been paid a lower salary, as a rule, than
an ordinary ditch digger. And yet it requires only
, a fair amount of muscle in the hands, arms, and
back to efficiently wield a pick, while even the poor
est assistant teacher must put in years of study and
prepamx;xl to equip him or her in even the poorest
sort of ion. And we say this not in a spirit of
denouncing such high wages for ditch digging but
in a spirit of deploring the miserable wages of the
rural teachers. The common ditch digger is, per
haps, worth what he is paid and maybe even more:
How much more, then, is the wielder of the minds
and characters of the youth of our land worth!
A boy or girl with less than a grammar school
education can attend a business school for six
months and then earn a salary of around $25.00 a
week, while a more energetic and ambitious boy or
girl may prepare eleven or even fifteen years or more
for teaching and then have to work all his or her
life at teaching for a salary that searcely equals the
above amount. |
It is not to be wondered at that the best talented
boys and girls seldom go in for teaching. Their
tastes may incline them to teaching, as also may
their sense of duty to their fellow beings. But this is
perhaps unfortunately, an age when ones success
is determined largely by ones earning capacity. So
these best and most ambitions minds must, as a rule,
g 0 into the business world or professional world
other than that of teaching, for the sake of making
a better living.
The result is that the children of the land are
‘oftentimes left either in incompetent hands, or in

‘e hands of competents whose idealism is stronge:
han the love of making a success from the ordinary
riew point of the world. And the latter are very
ew, for a materialistic world is rather poor soil fo
he growing of idealism of so unselfish a nature.
So we go on sacrificing our boys and girls on the
itar of poor schools equipped with poorly paic
teachers. A

Buy At Home '
Under the above caption the Atlanta Constitu
ion of yesterday has the following to say editori
ally:
““While visiting at the home of her daughter
recently a New York lady was so impressed
with a hat the younger woman had just bought
from a local milliner that she not only procured
a hat for herself at the same place, but stocked
herself with a complete fall and winter outfit of
wearing apparel to take back with her when
she returns to the metropolis.
‘“She found upon inspection of the wares of
fered here that in point of style and workman
ship the merchandise carried by Atlanta mer
chants is equal to the best that is procurable in
New York, and whatever differences there are
in prices are in favor of the buyer in this city.
““It was economy for her to come from New
York to buy her millinery and other wearing
apparel.
““Too many of our people are imbued with
the mistaken idea that they must buy eclothing
in New York. ;
‘“ Atlanta money should be put back, as far
as practicable, into Atlanta commerce, thus to
promote the general welfare of the community
from which the money is earned.
““The constructive, the patriotic, thing for
all those who buy to do is to patronize home
industry and home commercial enterprise.
‘“lt pays in the long run.’”’ :
With the exception of the actual incident eited
every word of the above eould be said in regard to
Marietta, and in fact in most respects to every city
of this county.
Most people are laboring under the mistaken
idea that they must do their principal shepping in
Atlanta, or elsewhere. The same is trie of the peo
ple living in the smaller towns of the county in re
gard to the larger cities.
An actual eomparison of home prices with those
in larger cities will almost always reveal the fact
that the same quality of goods can be procured as
cheap or cheaper at home.
It is true that the large city stores have the ad
vantage of carrying larger stocks and of sometimes
getting their material at a lower cost owing to the
fact that larger quantities are bought. But, then,
they labor under the disadvantage, when compared
to the smaller city stores of having an overhead ex
pense £0 much higher that the retail price must
often times be higher than that of the smaller city
merchant, -
The other day we noticed shirts in a Cobb cunty
store selling for 75 cents apiece that we had never
been able to get for less than twice that amount in
a larger city.
THE MARIETTA JOURNAL
Again we had a conversation with a man who!
id that he always did his trading in a larger ecity
-cause he could get the same quality of goods at
much cheaper price. On comparing a new suit of
veralls worn by his boy which he had bought else
‘here it was discovered that he had paid a total of
9 cents more for the suit of overalls than the same
rrand was being advertised for in a home store not
rore than half a mile from where he lived. He had
‘one to the trouble and cost of traveling many miles
‘or the sake of paying 19cents more for the same
piece of goods. * :
And so it is with most things that we buy. A
-areful investigation of home prices and quality will
rearly always reveal an advantage in favor of the
wome store. This is true whether ‘““home’’ be in
Vlarietta, or in some smaller city of Cobb. There
wre, of course, some few exceptions.
