Atlantans Take a Spin
Over Cobb County Roads.
Mr., Walter Candler, agent of the
Marmon Automobile Co., in Atlanta,
arrived in Marietta Monday afternoon
in his Marmon car. With him were
his wife, Mr. and Mrs. F. L., Markham
and Mr. J. F. Vanßensselaer. They
were on a pleasure trip through the
country for an afternoon drive and re
turned via Powder, Springs.
For a pleasure tripand steady runs
for long drives, the party was very en
thusiastic over their car as against the
usual mode of transportation—the rail
road and street car, Between Atlanta
and Marietta the road is uniformly
good and is becomming a favorite for
autoists.

Mr. W. C. Sampler makes
Some Bright and Inter
esting Comments on
Work Done.
- ROSWELL, GA., Nov. 29. 1909
Editor Journal and Courier:
If any one has flowers for me, [
would rather he would strew them in
my pathway while I am living than to
place them on my coffin, when I'm
dead.
I would rather have one word of en
couragment whispered in my ear than
great trumpet tones of praise at my
grave., Well, I don’t know what the
traveling public will have to say at the
grave of our faithful Commissionerg
who have planned, and the men in
stripes, who have executed the great
improvements already done on some
of our public roads. But I have not
seen in print that amount of praise I
think is due these worthy managers of
public affairs. I haven’t traveled over
Cobb county very much, but I wish to
mention especially two places on the
Roswell and Marietta road that made
me feel like shaking hands with some
body when I traveled over them. One
was the hill near Mr., J. M. B.
Taylors farm. The other at Mr, Tritts
place at Soap Creek. These hills were
once 80 steep and rough they made a
team sweat to think of them. Now an
engine could pull a train of cars up
them and not feel worried a bit. Yon
glide over the roads so smoothly now
it makes a man feel so good when he
cets home he goes right in and kisses
his wife just for free, bounding joy.
Now Mr. Editor and dear readers,
just give us more of these good roads
and see if we farmers don’t pay the
tax without a grunt.
I didn’t mean, I had not heard any
‘body praisiug this great work, for
every body is rejoicing cver it except
the grumbler. And he is just like Mr.
Bill Haine’s was by a tack he had
taken out of his shoe because it stuck
his foot and then had it put back be
cause he missed it so much.
Now someone says, what does it cost
to make good roads ?
Well, I don’t know. But when
the expense is divided around
among 8o many it’s just a little
wee bitloff of every mans bale of cotton
and barrel of syrup.
What are they worth? Well I think
{ou can’t estimate good roads in dol
ars and cents any more than you can
good air or the sunshine that opens
the cotton boll. So now brother far
mers lets hush up our grumbling, all
p 1l together and get roads all over
our God blessed land of love and sun
shine that will make our grandchild
ren rise up and call us blessed after
we’ve been in the grave hundreds of
years.
Yours for smooth traveling.
