Streets ot Smyrna
Are Now Well Lighted
Beginning with Christmas Eve night
the town of Smyrna found itself no
longer in darkness. One of her promi
nent citizens had presented the town
with a number of street lamps and they
were erected and burning brightly, as
a Christmas present to the people.

ANTHONY MURPHY DEAD:

- CHASED THE "RAIDERS”
Was One of the Men Who
Recaptured the Stolen
Engine ““General.”
Anthony Marphy, the last known
survivor of the famous race for the
“‘General” on the Confederate side,
died in Atlanta, Monday. He was a
pioneer Atlantan and one of the citys
saccessful men. He was master me
charic of the State road at the time
of the raid. A party of federals head
ed by Jas. J. Andrews, boaided the
train at Marietta, on Apnl 12, 1862,
and at Big Shanty (now Kennesaw)
which was at that time the lunch
station, succeeded in capturing the
train. The conduetor, W. A. Fauller,
the engineer, Jeff Cain, and the master
mechanic of the road, Mr. Murphy,
were at thé time taking breakfast at
the railroad station restaurant.
Ag soon a 8 they saw that the engine
had been cut loose and captured, they
joined in pursuit, at first on foot. At
Acworth they got a handear and at
Kingston an engine They esucceeded
in captaring the ‘‘General’’ before it
reached Chattanooga.

Supreme Court Holds That
Judge Morris Made No
Error in Trial.
Willard Webb the negro who was
convieted in the Superior court of
Cobb county on a charge of assaulting
Mrs. Brown near Vinings Station will
go to the gallows.
The case was appealed to the Su
preme Court but that tribunal last
week rendered a decision that Judge
Morris made no error in his rulings
and the judgment of the eourt is af
firmed.
Webb will be resentenced as soon as
the papers are received from the Su
preme Court. He will be given at
least swenty days between the time of
his sentence and the date of his execu
tion, and will, therefore probably be
hanged late in January or early in
February. :
It is said an applieation will be made
to Governor Brown to commute the
sentence to life imprisonment.

Dr. C. T Nolan, of Marietta, wag on
Wednesday appointed by Governor
Brown as a member of the state board
of medical examiners to succeed Dr.
E. R. Anthony. of Griffin, whose term
expires on January 7 Dr. Nolan’s ap
pointment is for a term of three years
from that date.
