A GREAT YEAR FOR MARIETTA.
VI‘HE ANNOUNCEMENT in the
Joarnal end Courier last week
that the plant of the Kennesaw Marble
Company will be rebailt on even a
larger and finer scale than that splen
did industry possessed before the fire,
s eause for congratulation all round,
When the plant was burned there
was & possibility thatit might be moved ‘
to the quarries, very flattering over
tures to that end having been made.
The loss to Marietta would hava been
gerious and we rejoice over the fact
that the directors have decided to re- |
build on thegite of the former plant. |
The fire was a misgfortune on aceount
of the Joss, but there are come com
pensations. The new plant is to be one
of the models of this country. Presi
dent Cortelyou has visited and inspect
ed all the modern mills and as a result
this Marietta industry is to be fully up
to-date and housed in a steel structure
that will be practically fireproof. :
Theep are great days for Marietta.
Within twelve months we are to see an
array of public improvements almost
unprecedented for cities the size of
ours—the completion of the new post
office; the completion of Mr. J. J.
Black's building ; the completion of the
sewer system ; the construction of the
new water works plant; the inaugura
tion of a real fire department; the
starting up of the paper mill, and the
rebuilding of the Kennesaw Marble
Works. '
Surely we may be pardoned for feel- i
ing enthusiastic. i
When we adid to these things what
the County Commissioners are doing
in improving the roads, we can confi- |
dently claim that Marietta and Cobb
esounty are well up toward the top of
the heap. l
After all the hullabaloo congress
has named a'Rules committee friendly
to Cannon. We remarked last week
that Cannon would come back if the
people didn’t stand guard but we didn’t
expect him to return before we could
get out another issue of the paper.
The Republican party belongs to the
trusts, and Cannon will continue to
control until the Democrats elect a
majority of the Congressmen, which
they may do fhis year.
Dr. James W, Bailey, of Gainesville,
is dead, at the age of 71 years, after an
illness of several weeks. Dr. Bailey
was well known throughout the state
and had a wide reputation as a ‘‘baby
doctor.”” He understood the diseases
of children and saved many little lives
during his long and useful career,
President Barrett denies a report
from Washington that the Farmers’
Union will unite with the American
Federation of Labor and foru: a new
political party.
Hon. Carter Tate has been reappoint
od United Staves Distriet Attorney for
the Northern District of Georgia.
Justice David J. Brewar died of ap
poplexy in Washington Monday night.
Only a Few Days
in Which to Register.
[he opportunity of citizens in which |
(o qualify as voters in the approaching
elections is rapidly drawing to a close.
The books close next Tuesday, and
all who fail to register by that date
will be deprived of their franchise for
at least one year. The taxpayers
generally throughout the county are
on the list, but a few newcomers and
young men just reaching their ma-‘
jority are not.
These, with a lot of these who do not!
own property, are still unregistered. {

Dear Sheriff McKinney »
In today’s Marietta papers I notice
your announcement as a candidate to
succeed yourself as sherifi,
Why did Bro. Kincaid desert you?
You started out together to be partners l
| for two terms and he says over his ,
own signature in the papers that you
have given him a square deal. If so, E
he ought to stand by you. If you go:
down in defeat, he ought to go down
with you. l
It is none of my business, of course,
but as I read your announcement, 11
felt deep down in my heart ,that yom
are not being treated exactly right and
lam like Judge Morris injthat it dees
me good to show my colors for a friend.
As a newspaper man for several _years
I have come in close contact with
‘many sherifis, but I do honestly be
lieve that you are the bestJsheriff that
.Ihave ever known. I have in mind
‘now a certain North Georgia sheriff
'that catches every negro that gets into
}trouble, but he never finds a white
ivoter, if his friend. You are not that
' kind, but do your duty as you sce it.
. Now, I hope you will go ahead and
' win this race with a big majority, and
'1 believe you wiil, for I have never
| known one, who loved his mother as
| you did, to go down in defeat in any of
' his undertakings.
E And lam glad that you and your
' good little wife are saving what you
'make out of your office, It will come
'in mighty nice in old age
‘ Your friend,
J. A. Bagwell.

' The farmers have seemingly for
| gotten the long, hard winter, and have
| gone to their Spring work with a rush.
[ Everything that can plow has been
hard at it for two weeks, and a supris
ling amount of work has been
accomplished. Lots of the farmers
have gone in for an improved corn
yield per acre, and the outlook is that
‘the eotton acreage will be about thef
same in Cobb county as last year. |
In the meantime, Mr. Candidate is |
