Marietta Invited to Meet
ing Thursday Night.
A meeting is to be held in the coun
cil chamber in the court house Thurs
day night, the 22d, at seventhirty
o’clock to which every man who feels
an interest im the growth of Marietta
is invited. ;
The object i 8 to increase the mem
bership and boom the chamber of com
merce, through which the city is to be
advertised and its splendid advanta
ges presented before the public.
Never before has there been such
development as is now going on in
Georgia, for not only are the natives
up and doing, but gelden streams for
investment are coming in from the out
side.
Marietta can not affcrd to hide her
advantages in the presence of such
matchless opportunities.
President Moultrie M. Sesgions and
the other officers and directors of the
chamber of commerce are working
hard and they meed the co-operation
of the whole town. It is hoped that
every manufacturer, merchant, law
yer, doctor, real estate owner and ev
ery citizen who loves Marietta and
feels an interest in its welfare will at
tend the meeting and give his aid and
encouragement to the organization
through which it is hoped great things
will be accomplished.

CIRCUS COMING SATURDAY.
The Hagenbeck-Wallace shows will
exhibit in Marietta Saturday, Septem
ber 24.

Mr. M. J. Abbott Dead.
Mr. M. J. Abbott, a leading citizen
of Acworth and well known through
out this and adjoining states, dliedl
Monday morning at nine o’clock, in a
sanitarium in Atlanta, six days afterl
an operation for tumor. |
The remains were brought to Ac
worth Tuesday, and, after services in
the Presbyterian church, conducted by
Rev. E. D. Patton, were interred in the
city cemetery, in the presence of one
of the largest number of citizens ever
assembled there on a like occasion.
Mr. Abbott is survived, besides his
widow, by five children, Mr. Walter L.
Abbott, of Acworth; Mr. Joe Abbott,
of Marietta; Mr. Jack Abbott, of Til
ton; Mrs. Nathan Thompson, of Wa
lesca, and Mrs. Paul Martin, of Tilton.
Mr. Abbott had resided in Acworth
since quite a young man, being engag
ed in the mercantile business. He
served his home c¢ity as postmaster
during the last Cleveland administra
tion, since which time he has been the
traveling representative of a large fer
tilizer company of Nashville.
Mr. Abbott was sixty-four years old
at the time of his death. At the age
of seventeen, he entered the service
of the Confederate army and served
the last two years of the war, making
a loyal and brave solqier.
Mr. Abbott was twice married, his
first wife, the mother of the children
surviving him, being Miss Cotton, of
Powder Springs. Subsequent toc her
death, which occurred about seven
years ago, he was married to Miss
Strange, of Chattooga county.
There are many to mourn Mr. Ab
bott’s death. His was a genial, sunny
nature, warm heasted and loyal to his
friends, and will be sorely missed in
his accustomed walks.

IN THE MAYOR’S COURT.
Mayor Clay had sixteen to face him
when the curtain arose on Monday
night's performance. The result was
two acquittals, fourteen convictions,
ninety-five dollars and fifty cents in
fines, time consumed, forty minutes.
Two more unfortunates appeared Tues
day morning and were assessed fifteen
dollars. 1t is claimed the police de
partment is very near, if not quite,
self-sustaining.

LARGE HERON KILLED.
Mr. Charles McLain, living five miles
east of Marietta, brought to town Sat
urday, a blue heron, or crane, killed by
him that day. The bird was flying
over his yard, with two others of the
same species, and with a single-bar
reled shotgun, loaded with number 6
shot, at a distanee of 125 yards, it was
brought to the g't;g_up,d. The bird meas
ured six feet two inches from‘tip to
tip of wings and twelve inches less
from toes to point of bill.

GEORGIA, COBB COUNTY.
In pursance of an act of the general
assembly of Georgia, suthorizing a
rystem of public gehools for the town
ot Powder Springs, in said county, and
by order of the mayor and council of
said town. an election will be held in
said town of Powder Springs on the
15th day of October, 1910. for the pur
pose of determining whether a system
of public schools shall be established in
said town or not. Said election will be
held under the same rules and regula
tione as govern the election of mayor
and eouncil in said town. All voters
favoring the establishment of such gys
tem of public schools for said town
shall have on their baliots the words,
