NEXT WEDNESDAY'S ELECTION.
The general election*will take place
next Wednesday, at which the nomi
nations made in the white democratic
primary will be confirmed. The ef
fort to start an independent meove
ment has met with but little encour
agement.
Of course, it is to be regretted that
there was not perfect harmony in the
State convention, but the use of the
“steam roller” did not affect the re
sult of the primary. The men nomi
nated in the convention were those
who received the majority of both
the popular and county vote in the
white primary of August 23d. :
Nearly 200,000 men went to the
polls on August 23d and voted with
an implied agreement to support the
nominees, and we believe very few
will fail to do so.
The personality of the men noml-|
nated is not the issue. As a result,
of the war the people of Georgia saw
their State government in the hands
of carpet-baggers, scalawags and ne
groes. The work of rescue was at
first difficult, but for forty years every
¢ffort has -been to place our affairs
exclusively in the hands of the white
people.
Working toward a definite end wel
have finally found in the democratic
white primary an election in whichl
every qualified white voter may par-:
ticipate with utter disregard of the;
infamous federal provision that con-.
ferred. upon the negro the right t();
vote. |
The people of Georgia are wise, just
and conservative. The development
of our white primary plan has been
slow and every step has been tested. |
We do not expect to find perfection '
anywhere, but we should protect our
white primary as the crystallized wis
dom of forty years. |
Let us not, in an hour of personal,
resentment, endanger all that has:
been gained through the slow pertect-‘
ing of a plan.that has eliminated the
negro from politics in Georgia. |
Don’t hesitate about your duty. Go
to the polls on election day and vote
the straight ticket without a change
and without a scratch. You voted
for your favorite in the primary. You
vote for your State and white suprem
acy when you vote for the nominees.
After a long, warm debate the
‘national encampment of the Grand
"Army of the Republic at its final ses
#ion at Atlantic City indefinately post
poned action relative to the controversy
over the placing of the statue of Robert
E. Lee in statuary hall of the Capitol
at Washington., The vote was 133 to
102,
Ex-President Roosevelt was elected
temporary chairman of the Republi
can Convention which met in Saratoga,
N. Y., Tuesday, defeating Vice-Presi
dent Sherman, thus beating the ‘‘old
guard’’ to a frazzle, as he expressed it.
In his speech he praised Taft and
and roasted the Republican *‘bosses.”’
George Chavez, the Peruvian aviator,
who crossed the Alps in a flying ma
chine, and then fell thirty feet as he
was alighting at Domodossola, Italy,
died of his injuries Tuesday. At one
time in the flight he reached an alti
tude of 7,000 feet. He was twenty
three years old.
When Ex-President Roosevelt goes
to Atlanta on October Bth, it is expect
ed that he will be taken to Roswell to
visit the home of his mother.
Convict Force Moved.
The people of the western part of the
county are going to have better roads,
and that right soon. The entire con
vict gang has this week been moved to
the third road district, and will work
out all the highways of that district.
The first work is being done on the
main road from Lost Mountain to
Macland.

Hugo and His Disciple. '
A young mab, an adxfimr of the
great poet, attended one of Victor
Hugo's receptions, became engaged in
argument and lost his temper. Hugo
solemnly rebuked him, and he sub
sided. Presently the guests retired.
One of them, however, had forgotten
his umbrella and returned to get it.
Looking through an. open door from
the vestibuie, he perceived the young
man on his knees before the poet, sob
bing out his apologies for his disre- |

regal dignity, extended his hand to
him and bade him rise. |
