| Miss Gussie Groves’
Vacation Abroad.
The Atlanta Journal, a few days ago,
mentioned the fact that Miss Gussie
Groves, who teaches in the Southern
Shorthand and Busincss Uaiversity,
had given a lecture to the students on
her recent trip to Europe.
{ That the lecture was well worth hear
(ing cannot be doubted by any one
| knowing Miss Groves. But think of
| spending an evening with her, under
| electric lights in easy rockers, while
{ she deals off a stack of pictured postzl
t cards illustrating her account of her
? journey. It is really a stereopticon
| lecture in minature. Then the sou
venirs of various lands; the dainty,
| fragile mementoes of famous places
'('arved in wood, the peasant dolls,
| steins, laces, shawls and other things
| brought for gifts are all so interesting.
i To my own mind, however, the ex
l periences and opinions of this charm
ing, cultured and thoughtful young
lady are better worth telling you than
columns of chat about the pictures.
It was pleasant to know the party
! chaperoned by Miss Olive Faw was not
| sea-sick; that the ocean was as placid
as could be and the ladies sat on deck
listening while their leader read to
them about the places of interest they
were going over to see,
They were lucky enough to see the
infrequent, but woaderfully lovely
Alpine glow, on the snow of the Jung
frau, without delay in their journey.
They visited two of Queen Wilhelmi
na’s palaces, one the lovely country
place known as the house in the wood.
They also saw Queen Victoria's toys,
bridal and coronation robes and veils,
the homes of Shakespeare, his mother,
Mary Arden, his wife, Anne Hathaway,
and the church in which he is buried.
They saw Hamlet played in the
Shakespeare Memorial Theater, and
Marie Corelli’s beautiful home with
its window gardens of showy blossoms
with green vines framing them.
In one place the host was a friend of
Miss Faw and invited her party to sce
his cherry orchard, The trees were
immense and loaded with ripe fruit.
Ladders were placed 8o the guests
could be together in the branches like
a flock of birds., They were told to
break off limbs of cherries and hand
them down to those who did not dare
‘to climb. Miss Groves said she had
never before known the meaning of
‘‘cherry ripe,’’ nor the bliss of more
such-fruit-than-she-could-eat.
On theisland of Marken, in Holland,
they encountered some unique peasant
' children, oneof whom began to whistle
(““Yankee Doodle’’ in honor of the
Americans—who throw away their
small coins upon such entertainment,
At Veraailles she saw the man who
charms sparrows in the park, In
ILondon the thousande of fine things,
to her British cousins like family
heirlooms, held for her a sentimental
interest,
Her Scotch-Irish blood, perhaps,
explains why she preferred London to
Paris, The most impressive thing in
pature, to her eyes, was a snow-capped
mountain and the rmost marvelous
work of human hands the Lion of
Lucerne which was carved from a stone
on th? side of a mountain.
Men's pants at $2.50. Good
