A DASTARDLY CRIME.
As an outcome of labor troubles of
long standing, the building of the Los
Angeles Times, in Los Angeles, Cal.,
was blown up Saturday and twenty
persons killed and many injured. The
debris caught fire after the explosion
and the bodies of the dead were char
red.
The Times was published by Gener
al Harrison Gray Otis, one of the most
prominent men in California and a
politician of national reputation. He
was on his way home from Mexico at
the time of theexplosion. |
Twenty years ago the Times had
trouble with its printers and became
a non-union office. It has been fight
ing union labor ever since. |
The explosion of Saturday was in a
passage way under the building and is
described as follows by a man who was
in the composing room:} ;
‘“A terrific force from below seemed
to raise a section of the floor clear to'
the roof. The upheaval came between |
two linotype machines. Flames and .
broken timbers flew in all directions. |
The bodies ‘of the men were thrown |
against the ceiling,”’ t
Fire following completed the de
struction. The loss in property was !
$500,000. The criminals did not limit
their operationsto the newspaper office,
but attempted to blow up the beautiful
home of General Otis, and other build
ings, Very heavy rewards have been |
offered for the culprits and several ar
rests have been made. The labor'
unions deny any responsibility for the
crime, ]
Four persons were killed and twentv
seriously injured in the Vanderbilt ,
auto races at the Long Island Parkway |
Saturday. Among those killed was '
Milton R. Bacon, of Savannah, son of |
the late D. C. Bacon. He was on a car
of Harold Stone which burst a tire, '
turned over and crushed Bacon to ‘
death. Another car was wrecked and
plunged into a third, injuring manyl
persons, I

City and Farm Property Sold.
Mr. H. P. Sauls bas sold through
the real estate firm of Green & Sessions
his store property on Cherokee street,
and the warehouse on Hansell street.
Through the same firm, the old Sax
Morris place, five miles north of town,
on the Canton road, has been sold by
Mr. B. T. Frey to Mr. W, H. Dunn.
It is expected this fall will witness a
large amount of real estate transfers.
There is a good demand for farming
lands, and the prices paid are in ex
cess of anything heretofore obtained
for similar properties.
Revolutionary Soldiers’ Graves.
This paper is requested to ask those
of its readers who know of the location
of graves of revolutionary soldiers in
Cobb county, to let it be known at this

The Daughters of the American

early American history, and when lo

- His Favorite.
“Which is your favorite Wagnerian
opera?’ asked the musician.
“Lemme see,” said Mr. Cumrox, ap
pealing to his wife. ‘“There are sev
eral that I never heard yet, aren’t
there?”
“Yes.“
“Well, I reckon {t’s one of them.”—
Washington Star.
Poor Little Goose!
“Seems as if 1 can never find a de
cent quill in the house,” growled the
eighteenth century author.
“I think it would pay you to keep a
goose,” sharply retorted his wife.
“You mean one that would be of
some help to me, don’t you?”’ chortled
