THE MARIETTA JOURNAL AND COURIER
HENRY A. WARD TAKES
"JOY RIDE” 10 FIRE
2
Store Ablaze, Makes Dash
e - ““--fl.
Through Moonlight to Carters
ville in Racing Machine.
Probably the greatest joy ride to a
fire ever taken by a Cobb county man
was taken by Mr. Henry A. Ward in
the early hours of Sunday morning.
It was one oclock when a long dis
tance call from Mr. Judson Ward at
Cartersville informed Mr. Ward that
the Greenwood Theater, in which his
big department store was located,
was on fire.
This cheerful news was accompanied
with the additional information that
it looked like the entire structure
would soon be cinders and ashes, ard
a 8 the stock was large enough to make
the margin between the insurance and
the loss a very serious matter, the
situation was one to make a man think
and think hard.
Mr. Ward hastily gave some direc
tions a 8 to what should be done and
hung up the phone.
A moment later he called up the
Brumby Garage and Mr. Edgar Nichols
responded that he would come im
mediately with the racing machine—
the one you almost lie down in and
that gets there like a greased streak.
Mr. Ward said to Mrs. Ward:
‘‘Go back to sleep, now ; whether the
whole store goes or not we will get
three meals a day,” and by that time
Mr. Nichols was at the gate in the
racer. Meantime G. C. Green, one of
the managers of the store, who was in
the city, had been notified and he and
Mr. Ward started for Cartersville with
M. Nichols at the wheel.
The moon was shining brightly and
the road was clear. They saw some
thing a few miles up that they took to
be Kennesaw, and flashed through
what the map says was Acworth. They
overtook a freight train and passed it |
at Allatoona. In an hour and a half
from the time the telephone rang Mr.
Ward was standing in the gtreet in
Cartersville Jooking at the fire. He
‘had covered thirty miles. |
“Enjoy the ride?”’ he asked, repeat
ing a question. ‘Why in ten minutes
after J started I had almost forgotten
the fire. I was never go impressed
with the value of sutomobiles. They
gimply annihilate space.”
The Greenwood Theater, a beautiful
block recently finished, wes owned by
J. R.Smith, who was Governor Brown’s
campaign mansger. The fire was
started, it is supposed, by an electric
wire. The building was equipped with
automatic sprinkling apparatas which
at once flooded the building. The fire
was extinguished with about $1,500
