JOSEPH M. TERRELL
‘
MAY BE APPOINTED
‘lt Is Expected that He Will
- Be Named Senator by
Governor Brown.
The death of Senator Clay leaves n‘
vacancy which Gotvernor Brown willi
fill. .
It is expected that he will appoint
former Governor Joseph M. Terrell. 1
The new Senator will go to Wash-!
ington in December and serve during‘
the winter session of Congress. The!
appointment is for the time interven
ing between now and the meeting of!
the Legislature. |
United States Senators are elected
by the General Assembly in joint ses
sion. The appointment by the Gov
ernor is not regarded as so impor-i
tant. The real fight will be for thei
unexpired part of the term for which]‘
the Legislature will elect. That will
expire in 1915, giving a term of four
years. The «United States Senator
ship is the highest honor that a State‘
can confer. It has long been Gov-‘
ernor Hoke Smith’s desire to serve
as Senator and there is every prob-;
ability that he will be a candidate
before the Legislature next summer.
As things now stand Governor
Smith will be inaugurated Governor
as soon as the Legislature meets next
June. It is suggested that he be
elected Senator by the Legislature
and that he then resign the Governor
ship to take effect about December
following, at which time he would go
to Washington and begin his term as
Senator.
That would leave a vacancy in the
Governor's office. The President of
the Senate would act as Governor
until an election could be held, which
would be within two months. There
are several ambitious Georgians who
would like to get into the race for the
Governorship to succeed Hoke Smith,
and the chances are that they will be
accommodated.

Regret to Give Him Up. 1
Foilowed by resolutions from his
congregation and many personal ex-l
pressions of regret because of his de
parture, Mr. 8. G. Brinkley preached'
a very interesting sermon on ‘“‘The
Love of God” at Sunday School.
It was very touching to see the chil
dren as well as older ones rush to the
altar to shake his hand, when they
were asked to do so by the Superinten
dent if they thought they had been
benefited by having had him with
them,
Mr. Brinkley has been a great help
to the Sunday School as well as the
church. He came here a stranger,
stayedjionly a short while, but his
entire congregation hated to see him
leave. He is a Christian gentleman
of the nighest type. He left Monday
morning for his home at Thomson,
Ga., where he will remain for a few
days with relatives and friends, and
go from there to Nashville, Tenn.,
where he will attend Vanderbuilt
University.
The following resolutions were
adopted by a rising vote of his congre
gation Sunday:
Be it resolved by the members of
Elizabeth church, that we and the
people and the congregation, of Eliza
beth church, part with our beloved
pastor and friend with sorrow and re
gret and that our prayers and best
wishes shall attend him wherever he
may go, and when he has finished his
course of study, that he may go hence
into other fields of Christian work.
Although he has been with this people
a short time, he has won their hearts
and their enduring love and affection
shall follow him.

of the five great rivers of India de

- *The best remedy against a lapse of
‘memory is the piece of thread tied
about the finger. But there is a well
authenticated case of a man whose
wife tied a piece of thread around his
finger in the morning to remind him
to get his hair cut.
On his way home to dinner he no
ticed the piece of thread. ‘“Yes, I re
member,” he said and, smiling proud
ly, entered the usual shop and sat
down before the accustomed artist.
“Why, I cut your hair this morning,
sir!” said the astonished barber.
