THE DEATH OF BENATOR CLAY.
It is with inexpressible sorrow that
we record the death of United States
Senator Alexander Stephens Clay,l
which took place in Atlanta, Sunday
at three o’clock. ]
In the quiet of a beautiful Sabbath
afternoon, enfolded in the arms of his
eldest son, he passed peacefully into
the eternal sleep. The long, stren
uous, brilliant career was ended.
Noble ambition, the strain of toil,
and study, the conflicts of the court
the fierce tumult of politics, the mo
mentous questions of government, the
battles for the people—these had made
a raging tempest within his breast
that kept aquiver every fiber of his
soul and being until at last the storm
was over and life's fitful fever ended.
Our sorrow over the death of Sen
ator Clay is first and foremost be
cause we loved him as a friend and
valued him as a citizen of our county.
The warm grasp of his hand, the smile
of his face, the kind words, the spirit
of helpful sympathy we shall miss|
most deenly. 1t is hard to realize that
we shall see him no more in this life—
our own plain, honest, fearless, faith
ful and im'm'ruptihl'e Steve Clay.
iTie career should be an inspiration
to thc youth of our state. With no

!world means that somewhere, some
’time the ties of love must be torn
asunder. It is God’'s way and God's

consolation in the sympathy that
blends with our sorrow. To the loved
ones of his home, to the wife whom
he idolized, to his children, to the
venerable father and mother, who sur

{
———— !
Morris Burton and Felix Foster,
well known negroes, got into a right
warm fight on Lawrence street Satur
day night, in which-a knife and pistol]
were used,
Burton used the knife, so Foster |
says, and, to repel an attack [rnm:
Burton, he was [orced to usge his!|
pistol. Five shots were fired, but|
none did damage. ‘
This is one of many Saturday night
rows that make life worth living to
the average town negro. Hardly a
Monday’s session of the police court
but what has one or more of this|
character of cases. ’
Burton and Foster were brought be- |
fore Mayor Pro Tem Gantt, who euter-s
ed fines of ten dollars and cost against;
each defendant
~ Seven other cases were tried at thel
‘same session of court, mostly for plain
‘drunks and drunk and disorderly, in
tall of which the acting mayor assessed
fines ot sixty-four dollars.

The readers of this paper will be
{pleased to learn that there is at least
'one dreaded disease that science has
' been ab'e to cure in all its stages, and
that is Catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cuore is
thie only positive cure now known to the
! medical fraternity, Catarrh being a
constitutional disease, requires a consti
‘tutional treatment liall‘s Catarrh cure
is taken internally, acting directly upon
‘the blood and mucous surfaces of the
system, thereby destroying the founda
tion of the disease, and giving the pa

its work. The proprietors have so much
faith in its curative powers that they

that it fails to cure. Send for list of

“Wha-what for?”
‘ “Ifor living. What excuse do you

The Drummer.
Drummers seldom pray much, pay
their bilis, usually hate shams. dodge
touches, have warm hearts, quick wits,
much nerve and more courage, but are
born scoffers. They have good mem
ories, much humor and a fund of
stories limited only by time. They can
preach a sermon, lead in prayer, time
a horse race, umpire a ball game, make
a stump speech and have an opinion
upon every known subject from prize
fights to the nebular hypothesis,.—Com
mercial Traveler's Magazine.
Firmness.
“When my wife makes up her mind,”
said Mr. Meekton, *“‘there is no use of
arguing with her.”
“But every woman changes her opin
fon sometimes.”
“Yes. And Henrietta is particularly
resolute when she makes up her mind
to change her opinion.”—Washington
Star. .
A Healthful Town.
“If this town is as healthful as you
say it is, why do there happen to be so
many doctors’ signs in evidence?”
“They are nearly all the signs of eye
doctors. The people are so healthy
here that they stay up nights enjoying
the climate and injure their eyes.”—
Chicago Record-Herald.
. Evidence of Faith.
Mrs. Brooke—Have you any faith in
life insurance? Mrs Lynne—Yes, in
deed; I've realized $lOO,OOO from two
husbands, and they weren’t very good
ones either.—Judge’s Library.
Descriptive.
Stella—Would you say she was a well
dressed woman? Bella—No; she looks
like a Wall street bear who has cov
ered in a desperate hurry.—Puck.
