e Stage Snow.
In “Personal Reminiscences of Hen
ry Irving” Bram Stoker lets his read
ers into the secret of how the snow
scene in “The Corsican Brothers" was
made so effective:
“All over the stage was a thick blan
ket of snow, white and glistening in
the winter sunrise—snow that lay so
thick that when the duelists, stripped
and armed, stood face to face they
each secured a firmer foothold by
clearing it away. Of many wonderful
effects this snow was perhaps the
strongest and most impressive of real
fty. The public could never {magine
how it was done. It was salt—common
coarse salt—which was white in the
appointed light and glistened like real
Bnow. There were tons of it. A crowd
of men stood ready in the wings with
little baggage trucks such as are now
used In the corridors of great hotels,
gllent with rubber wheels, On them
were great wide mouthed sacks full of
salt. When the signal came they rush
ed in on all sides, each to his apnoint
ed spot, and tun \ 1t his 1
gpreading it evenly with great w
bladed wooden shovels.”

Not much i{s known in this country i
of St. Corentin, but Quimper, where he
dwelt, cherishes a legend of him. Ac
cording to the versfon given by Mary
Atkinson in “A Chateau In Brittany,”
“God, pleased with his life of devo
tion, provided his food. A little fish
swam to him every day, presenting
its side that the hermit might cut
away a sufficlent portion for his needs.
As soon as it was thrown back into
the water the fish became immediately
whole again, with no faintest trace of
the cut.” [

Our First Free School.
- The first free school established in
the United States was in the province
of Massachusetts Bay in the year 1641
by order of the general colonial court.
- In 1647 the same authority declared 1
' that free schools should be established 1
within every town having fifty house- i
holders under penalty of a fine of £3,
This fine was doubled by a declaration
made in 1671 and again doubled in
1683.

Attack Like Tigers.
In fighting to keep the blood pure
the white corpuscles attack disease
germs like tigers. But often germs
multiply so fast the little fighters are‘
overcome, Then see pimples, boi]s,\
‘eczema, saltrheum and sores multiply
!nnd strength and appetite fail. This
‘condition demands Electric Bitters to
!regulate stomach, liver and kidneys
‘and to expel poisons trom the blood.
' “They are the best blood purifier,”
'writes C. T. Budshn, of Tracy, Calif.,
';"I have ever found.”” They make rich,
red blood, strong nerves and build up

| The Trouble With One of the Eggs.
| A man in a cheap restaurant ordered
two soft boiled eggs and got them.
Then he opened the eggs. The first
one was all right, but the second—
He called to the waliter,
“Hi, you; look at this egg. I've a
notion to make you eat it.”
The waliter came and looked. A far
from pledsing odor arose, but either
| the waiter had a bad cold or he re
fused to notice it.
{ *“What's the matter with them
eggs?’ he asked. “They looks all
right to me. Wasn't they boiled long
enough 7"’
| *“Well,” replied the patron slowly,
“they were both boiled long enough,
but one of ‘em wasn't boiled soon
enough.”—Chicago News.
