Undertaking Establishment
of W. J. Black Destroyed
—Blaze in Western &
Atlantic Depot.
The Marietta fire company was kept
busy Wednesday night of last week
when the undertaking establishment
of Mr. W. J. Black and the record
room in the W. & A, freight depot were
burned.
At midnight employes in the Paper
mill noticed the fire in the freight de
pot and sent in the alarm to fire head
quarters. Chief Morris reached the

fire almost under control with the
chemical when the supply became ex
hausted and he had to resort to water.
The fire was confined to the record
room, and the financial loss, excepting
the valuable records, will not exceed
one hundred dollars.
Mr. Morris returned to the fire house,
recharged his chémical engine, and
got his wagon and horses back in place,
to be prepared for another call, when
he started back to the depot to see if
everything was all right there. As he
stepped from the engine house he no
ticed the reflection of a blazein the W,
J. Black building. Before he could
get to the fire and stretch two lines of
hose the entire building was a mass of
flames. Mr. Morris broke open the
doors of the Hicks livery stable next
door and turned all the horses out,
while the other members of the fire de
partment fought the flames.
The entire building is a total loss

Among the contents which were also
destroyed were over fifty caskets, an
undertaker’s wagon, a buggy and a
number of fine robes and trappings
used in conducting funerals. Mr, Black
places his loss at two thousand dollars,
with §sl,ooo insurance.

HOW DIAZ QUIT THE
PRESIDENCY OF MEXICO
President Porfirio Diaz, in a letter
read by the president of the Chamber
of Deputies, Thursday afternoon, re
signed the presidency of the Republic
of Mexico, and at exactly 4:54 o’clock
the acceptance of the renunciation by
the deputies was announced.
Everyone had expected an uproar
and demonstration when theannounce
ment should be made, but within the
chamber the words of the President
announcing the event were followed by
a dead silence. The deputies seemed
awed by what had taken place.
Streets leading to the Lall were filled
with people, and the news that Diaz
was at last no mure the President was
the signal for the wildest shouting and
manifestations., There was no vio
lence nor destruction of property.
The motion was offered to aceept the
President’s resignation. One hundred
and sixty-seven deputies voted aye,
while two of them did not express
themselves. They were Benito Juarez,
a descendant of President Juarez, and
Concepcion Del Valle As their names
were called the legislators arose and
bowed their affirmation.
In similar fashion the resignation of
Vice-President Ramon Corral, now in
France, was unanimously accepted,
and similarly Francisco Leon De La
Barra, late ambassador to Washing
ton, was chosen provisional President.
President Diaz’s letter of resignation
follows :
. ‘*Sir: The Mexican people who gen
erously have covered me with honors,
who proclaimed me as their leader
during the International War, who pa
triotically assisted me in all works un
dertaken to develop indusiry and the
commerce of the Republic, establish
its credit, gain for it the respect of the
world, and obtain for it an honorable
position in the concert of nations; that
same people, Sir, have revolted in
armed military bands, stating that my
presence in the exercise of the supreme
executive power, is the cause of thisin
surrection,
*“1 do not know of any fact imputa
ble to me which could have caused this
gocial phenomena; but, permitting.
though not admitting, that I may be
unwittingly culpable, such a possibil
ity makes me the least able to reason
out and decide my own culpability.
Therefore, respecting the will of the
people, and in accordance with article
82 of the Federal “constitution, I come
before the supreme representatives of
‘the nation in order to resign unreserv
‘edly the office of constitutional presi
' dent of the republic with which the na
tional vote honored me, which I do
with all the more reason, since, in or
der to continue in office, it would be
necessary to continue shedding Mexi
can blood, endangering the credit of
the country, dissipating its wealth, ex
hausting its resources, and exposing
its policy to international complica
tions.
‘I hope, gentlemen, that when the
passions which are inherent to all rev
olutions have been calmed, a more
conscientious and jutified study will
‘bring out in the national mind a cor
rect acknowledgement which will allow
me to die carrying engraved in my
soul a just correspondence of the esti
‘mation which throughout my life I
have devoted and will devote to my
countrymen.

Provisional President De La Barra
acknoweledged his elevation to that
high office in an open letter to the
Mexican people. In it he declares that
he will not be a candidate for either
president or vice president when a gen
eral electién is called.
Diaz and the members of his family
sailed for Europe Wednesday.

to the game laws to protect Republi

and to make it a misdemeanor to kill
