THE WORLD-FAMOUS TUNNELi
BUILDER TO BE IN ATLANTA |
!
He Was Born Near Marietta and
It is Likely He Will Visit the
Old Home Place
William G. McAdoo, the New York
tunnel builder, who was born near
Marietta during the war, will be in
Atlanta on November 18th and will
be the principal speaker at the Wood
row Wilson rally. The rally will be
Ireld at the auditorium and will be
attended by many distinguished men.
Walter P. Andrews is president of
the fifth district Woodrow Wilson
club which is doing what it can to
make the New Jersey governor pres
ident of the Unmited States. On Sat
urday Mr. Andrews received a tele
gram from Mr. McAdoo, expressing
his best wishes for the success of the
movement and saying he would be
present,
Mr. McAdoo was on the program
for a speech at the Commercial Con
gress in Atlanta last spring but a ca
blegram called him to Europe. He
had intended to visit Marietta while
in Georgia and see the old house in
which he was born. It is on the Pow
der Springs road and is on the place
owned by Judge Atkinson. It is
hoped the people of Marietta will
have the pleasure of entertaining Mr.
McAdoo and that the city will be hon
ored by a visit from him when he
comes to Atlanta.
HANGING IN DECEMBER. i
Judge Morris went over to Alpha
retta last week and sentenced Lee
Jones, a negro, to-be hanged on Fri
day, December Ist, for the murder of
Kike Howell. A movement has been
started to have the governor com
mute the sentence to life imprison
ment and a respite of a few weeks
will be asked. There has never been
a legal hanging in Milton and there
are some persons in that county who
do not want to see the record broken.

Minister Who Formerly Preached in
Marietta, Will Be Pastor of
Church In Atlanta.
The old friends of Rev. Hugh K.
Walker, who was pastor of the Pres
byterian church in Marietta many
years ago, will be glad to learn that
he has accepted the call to the First
Presbyterian church in Atlanta and
- will at least be near them again.
I Dr. Walker has been for fourteen
| years pastor of Iminanuel Presbyte
lrian church at Los Angeles, Califor
' nia, one of the largest congregations
lon the Pacific coast. Last January
ithe Journal and Courier published an
iaccount of the presentation to him
of a $12,000 home by Mrs. Mary J.
lßankin, a wealthy member of the
church. The church has three thou
sand members.
Dr. Walker preceded Dr. Patton as
pastor of the Presbyterian church in
| Marietta. He was married to Miss
i Lizzie Mooré, of Dalton, and Rev.
'Lynn Walker, of West End, is his
; brother.
i As pastor of the First Presbyterian
church of Atlanta Dr. Walker will
jsucceed Dr. W. L. L'lngle. He re

that they called him unanimously and
; Saturday a telegram was received an

WINS IN GLIDDEN TOUR.
CAPTURES §l,OOO PRIZE FOR
INDIVIDUAL CAR. |
Maxwell Team Wins the Coveted
Glidden Trophy and Adds to it’s
Long List of Victories.
Governor Hoke Smith’s Maxwell car
which carried Georgia's chief execu
tive and his daughter on the strenu
ous Glidden journey and which fin
ished with a perfect score, was award
ed the individual car prize, which ig
the $l,OOO trophy offered by the cham
ber of commerce of Anderson, S. (~
for a perfect score by any car, irre
spective of price,
The Maxwell team finished with the
only perfect gscore, and secured the
Glidden trophy, and as the Anderson
prize was the only other trophy of
fered, the Maxwell’'s victory surpassed
anything on record in previous tours.
It is considered a great achievement
because it is a car of moderate price,
that competed against 72 other cars,
‘many of them selling at $4,000 and
$5,000.
‘ The Anderson trophy is awarded
outright, while the Glidden trophy is
1 competed for every year,
t The four Maxwell cars with their
perfect scores, took all the prize
money in the class 3 division.
There has been much interest in
the performance of the silver-plated
Columbia car driven by Miss Birdie
Marks, of Athens, who was the only
woman driver in the tour.
~ Keeping apace of drivers with years
of endurance run exparience, tra
versing the worst roads in the country
under the most trying conditions, Miss
Marks finished the terrific 1454 mile
run without a penalty. From the day
the tour started in New York until
the cars were checked at the finish in
Jacksonville, Fla., she never once fal
tered. Stories of her pluck in this run
preceded Miss Marks, and she was
cheered by thousands who lined the
course, That a woman should triumph
where 58 out of 72 men failed was a
much talked of event on the tour.
This young society leader was
abroad when advised that her friends
had entered her car in the long run.
She burried home, arriving tired from
the trip; a day in advance of the na
tional touring championship event.
She went over the car, found it me
chanically perfect, and with three of
her feminine friends aboard, started
for the south,

KIPLING EVENING {
MUCH ENJOYED.
Delightful Entertainment at Court
House—Reading by the Rev.
W. W. Memminger.
The Kipling evenjng at the court
house was very much enjoyed by an
audience mostly of ladies. Miss Vir
ginia Crosby sang the “Song of the
Soul,” and “Every Little Movement,”
accompanied by Mrs. Charlie Steph
ens on the piano. Master Moses Ja
cob played two violin pieces with pi
ano accompaniment by Miss Ruth
Stephens.
Rev. E. 8. Doan introduced the
reader, Rev. W. W. Memminger, who
is rector of All Saints’ church in At
lanta, and a warm admirer of the
famous English writer whose style is
so original and strong, and whose
subjects are so peculiar to India -and
to British soldiers. No doubt many
ladies expected to hear the handsome
clergyman, in his best recitative, re
peat Kipling’'s “Recessional,” al
though it would seem rather like
“talking shop.” But instead of those
sonorous, dignified and gplendid
verses, he gave us the British sol
dier's tribute to “Fuzzy Wuzzy”’—
those bushy-headed, black savages in
festing African deserts—‘‘the only
thing that doesn’'t care a damn for a
regiment of British infantry.”
Mr. Memminger read one very
amusing story and one that was hor
rible. Also several poems ending
with one he considered as fine as
anything ever written:
“When earth’s last picture is painted,
And the tubes are twisted and
dried,
When the oldest colors have faded
And the youngest critic has died
We shall rest and, faith, we shall
need it,
Lie down for an eon or two
Till the Master of all good workmen
Shall set us to work anew.”

Doan’s Kidney Pills Have " Done
Great Service for People Who
Work In Marietta.
Most Marietta people work every day
in some strained, unnatural position-—
bending constantly over a desk--rid.

laborious housework; lifting, reaching
pulling, or trying the back in a hun

strains tend to wear, weaken and injure
the kidneys until they fall behind in
their work of filtering the poisons from
the blood. Doan’s Kidney Pills help|
sick kidneys, put new strength in bad‘
backs, Marietta cures prove it, |
J. A McEntire, 107 Black street, Ma
