his friends, ha
Roosevelt, will see him lose, a
will not if there are any delegates on
the market.
Still, there is this to be considered:
1 bet two dollars on Roosevelt the other
day, and I never won a bet in my life.
If 1 lose let her go. I'd give two
dollars just to see Teddy get a good
swat. -
They all think up here that if Roose
velt is not nominated he will undoubted
ly bolt. But the Republican party
split up is uathinkable, It is glued to
gether with the adhesive gum of uni
versal graft, and you watch and see if
they don’t stick.
¢« ¢ =
I can't blame Roosevelt for wishing
to get back, and I can't blame Taft for
trying to stay put. |
The White House grounds are very
beautiful and inviting just now.
The grass is richly green and the
great trees make a shade that is cool
and breathes of the deep woods. Far
back from thé Avenue is the home of
Mresident-—so like an old Southern
mansion. —l¢ séems 80 quiet and rest
ful, so in contrast)£oo, with the made
to-order homes of ‘Q‘;"Bfl' -
Money can buy, but it seidom builds a
place like the White House.
¢ & @
But its apparent repose is a hollow
mockery. As evidence I offer Teddy
and Taft. Oh, it boils in there all
right. Politics, politics, politics.
Standpatters pull one way. Pro
gressives pull another. Ninety millions
of people, nearly five hundred Congress
men, about a hundred Senators, office
seekers and office holders galore, are
after the one occupant of the stately
mansion in the quiet grounds, to say
nothing of the problems of State, and
the wars and rumors of wars. “‘Un
easy rests the head that wears a crown.”’
® * »
And there are other troubles. 1 saw
Taft, fat man that he is, stand for
hours in the hot sun and view an al
most endless parade that passed before
the Columbus memorial that was un
veiled Saturday.
¢ » *
This memorial is worth looking at.
It is a heavy marble shaft in front of
the Union depot, surmounted by a great
marble globe, with marble eagles in
impossible positions, and figures that I
don’t know what they mean, but Col
umbus is there and he is all right, a
massive figure of the great navigator
who accidently discovered America
while owm his way somewhere else.
* *® L
The unique thing about the memorial
to my mind is the great flags that are
to float about it. Between the depot
and the monument are three iron poles
about a hundred feet high surmounted
by bronze eagles and from each pole
floats an immenge American flag.
¢ ¢ =
Speaking about flags, let me tell you
‘about our Senatorial Office Building
flag. s |
In the midst of the beautifu! lawn in
the rear of the building is a fountain
‘with a pool about fifty feet across in
which water planty are growing. This
fountain throws up streams that form
a star. The wind blows the streams
hither and yol. - The afternoon sun
fally on the wind-tossed drops, forming
a rainbow, that, following the currents.
waves, graceful and beautiful, like a
real flag. . ;
. & »
By tte way, ¥ wnotice Tom Hudson
has jamped the track and is not running
for Governor any more. Friends
would not put up the money and Tom
Watson wouid pot support him.
And Tom Wation is not going to run
from the farmer’s side, for better
markets.
““Senator Smith, the farmers and
consumers appreciate your service in
this very much, we hope you will be
able to put it through the House and
will be able to get the right men in
charge that the people may get the
quickest possible benefits.”’ :
Evil of Worrying.
By constant worry the power of self
control is lost. The ability to be cheer
ful, courageous and sometimes even
interesting, is gradually undermined.
Eventually this affects the health, the
appetite is banished and the diges
tion and probably the heart affected.
The unhappiness shows in the face.
Lines appear between the eyes, the
- eyes look dull, and the skin unheaithy
and probably wrinkied,
