I have endeavored since my announcement as a candidate for Solicitor General of the Blue Ridge Circuit, to see
every voter in the Circuit, but I have found it an absolute impossibility. I want all the voters of the Circuit that I
have seen, and those that I have not seen, to cast their ballots for me on the 21st day of August.
I have said no unkind things about my opponent in any manner, shape or form, and Ido not expect to. Ido not
believe that in politics a man has any right to discuss the private record of any man, but he has a right to discuss his
public record, and no living man can find where I have said anything against anyone in this race. What I have tried
to do is to run a clean open race, and asking the people to give me their votes, and promising them 2 clean square deal,
and that is what I expect to do. lam a young man. If 1 win this race, and treat the people right, I can get some
thing else in the world. Ifl don’t, I cannot, and I feel like the people of the Blue Ridge Circuit are going to say on
election day, “Herbert Clay, we will give you that chance. If you make good, we will give you something else. 1f you
don’t, we are through with you,” and 1 am going to do my best to make good.
1 want to thank the people in general for their many courtesies shown me since 1 entered this race. KEvery one
has been nice to me, and 1 appreciate it, and 1 appreciate my friends, and while all reports from the entire Circuit look
like my election, 1 want my friends to come out and vote and work for Herbert Clay. Ingratitude has no place in my
heart, and if elected, 1 expect to show my appreciation to the people by giving them an honest, clean administration.
