Telephone Saved Child’s Life
One of the children fell into a water tank on
an Alabama farma: d was rescued unconscious and
apparently lifeless. The frantic mother rushed to
the telephone and called the doctor six miles away.
He told her what to do and started at once, but
before he arrived the child was out of danger.
The protection of women and children is only
| one of the chief values of the telephone on the

DR. CHARLES A. WIKLE WRITES
OF BIG REXALL CONVENTION
UNITED DRUG COMPANY'S
LABORATORIES
Boston, Mass.,
August 18th,191..
Josiah Carter, Editor,
Marietta Journal,
Marietta, Ga,,
Dear Mr Carter:-
1 did a wise thing when 1 came to
Boston, for I never had such a good
time before. United Drug Company's
Convention openedin Mechanic's
Building this morning, when Mayor
John F. Fitzgerald of Boston wel
comed us to the city, Then for
three hours we listened to the
annual address of President Louis
K, Liggett, who told about the Com
pany’s progress in the past year, and
outlined some big plans that will
mean better goods and better ser
vice In every Rexall Store in this
country in the future.
There are over 2,000 druggists
here from every state in the Union,
from all the provinces of Canada and
from England, Ireland,Scotland and
Wales. Of course, a fellow can't
hope to know so many people per
sonally, but I know a good many at
that, and they’'re all such good co
operators and so filled with the Re
xall Spirit that when I meet the
strangers, an introduction seems un
necessary. A good many of the
Stockholders have brought their
wives and daughters and yesterday
afternoon the ladies were given an
auto trip to Wellesley College,
where they had five o'clock tea
on the campus. In the afternoon
we had another business meeting,
and at night the whole party
went to a grand concert given by
the United Drug Company at
Symphony Hall. Grand is no name
for it. The singers included Ma
dame Corine Rider-Kelsey, Madame
Rosa Olizka, Mr_ Orville Harrold, Mr,
Albert Spalding and Mr_ Cluade
Cunningham.
While we men were talking busi
ness this morning, the ladies went
on a boat trip to Plpmouth, Mass.,
where they saw Plymouth Rock
‘ and all the historic sPots
associated with the Pilgrims !
‘ There’s something going on every
!mimm\. When we're not in business
lsesion, or having a good time some
where, we are talking busines among
'om'sol\'os. and | have had o break
away to get time to write this. To
morrow is the big field day. The
whole party will go to Nantasket
Beach on the steamer Rose Standish,
there will be a Buffet Luncheon at
the Palm Garden at Paragon Park,
and all the Park entertainments,
chutes, scenic railways, etc., will be
’opc-n free to visiting Rexallities,
In the evening they are going to
give us an Old-Fashioned New Eng-:
land Clam Bake, followed by a Vau-:
deville Show, music dancing and a
fireworks display.
- Thursday, the last day, will be
‘sp(!nt in visiting the big candy plant |
where Liggett's, Fenway and Sat-l
urday Candies are made; the Rex
all Labratories, where we make Rex
all Remedies, Harmony Perfumes,
ete., and the new Pharmaceutical La
bratory just completed. The Con
vention will close with the annual
banquet to be held in Mechanicsi
Building Of course, 1 have enjoyed]
the good times, but the best featurej

Phone them now. “Why pu off joy till tomorrow?
of my trip has been the chance to
see just how the goods controlled by
The Rexal Stores are made. Now
that I have seen the care and skill
that goes into everything made by
the United Drug Company, I have
more reason than ever to be enthu
slastic over the Rexall proposition,
and to congratulate myself on the
fact that The Rexall Store in Ma
rietta is our store,
I suppose you know something
about the United Drug Company,
It was formed eleven years ago by
Louis K. Liggett, at a time when
there was absolutely no co-operation
among retail druggists, who were
making their own proprietary reme
dies in the back shop, buying their
goods in small quantities at long
prices, and in general conducting
business with a good deal of waste,
Mr. Liggett saw that if the buying
power and manufacturing facilities
oft he leading druggists could .be
combined, the result would be bet
ter service, higher grade goods and
lower prices for the public, Begin
ning with forty of the best known
retailers of the country, he organiz
ed the United Drug Co. and began to
manufacture Rexall Remedies, The
remedies were made right and sold
right, and the public was protected
by a guarantee of satisfaction or
money back, Mr. Liggett thought
it best to give the privilege of selling
Rexall goods to only one man in each
locality. :
In 1903 our business was confined
Rexall druggist unless his financial
standing and character were above
reproach. It wasn't long before the
public realized that the Rexall store
sign over a man’s door was proof
that that man could be trusted, and
that goods bought in that store
would be better, last longer and cost
less than goods bought elsewhere.
Then people began to ask for other
‘goods ‘“‘made by the same people who
}make Rexall.” To meet this demand
the United Drug Company began to
Emanufacture other goods.
In 1913 our business was confined
to one building, comprising only
30,000 square feet of floor space.
Today, United Drug Company owns
and operates factories, mills, labo
ratories, warehouses and branches,
all over the United States, Canada
and Great Britain, and we require
more than 1,000,000 square feet of
floor space-—or over 25 acres—to
supply the public with Rexall reme
dies; Harmony Perfumes and Toilet
‘Articles; Symphony Lawn, Ustaco
‘and Bokhara Stationary; Maximum,
Monogram and American Beauty
Rubber Goods; Klenzo and Margue
rite Tooth Brushes. In 1903 there
‘were 40 stockholders, today there
are more than 7,000. To meet these
men is a revelation, and you can tell
anybody that's interested in my do
ings that the ideas and new goods
that I've seen at this meeting have
more than paid my expenses for the
trip. I am coming home ecram full
of plans for a big campaign, and 1
am going to give the people of Mar
ietta such bargains in down-to-the
minute merchandise, and such ahead
of-the-clock service as they never
saw before, even in the Rexall Store.
Yours sincerely,
CHAS. A. WIKLE,
