WASHINGTON LETTER.
During the Congressional recess
Senater Bacon went down to Albany
to visit some friends and take a
hunt. One day while in the bath
tub he slipped and broke one of his
ripbs. He did not know, however,
that he had broken a rib until he
got back to Washington and was ex
amined by a doctor. When the sur
geons got through with him Senator
Bacon said they had done him up
like an Egyptian mummy.

Former Fire Chief Mace Morris
who has a good place in the folding
room of the Senate has about gotten
over his combination of ailments,
rheumatism and a broken leg. Ta~o
folding room is where they prepare
for mailing the thousands of publi
cations printed for the Senate. M-,
Morris has made good and it is like
ly that he will buy a home in Wash
ington.

Colonel John Collins, Postmaster
in the Senate Office building, who
has been spending a month at his
home in Canton, is on deck again.
He has quite a lot of spare time,
which he is improving by attending
lectures in the law department of
Georgetown University., Everybody
likes John Collins and he is one of
the young Georgia lawyers who have
won the admiration and strong
friendship of Senator Hoke Smith.

Congressman Underwood speaks
vonfidently of his election to the
Senate but I would like to see every
Democrat who has any influence in
Alabama get busy. The defeat of
Underwood by Hobson would be a
calamity to the Democratic Party.
The reason is this: Underwood is the
man who made the tariff bill. The
tariff bill is going to be the issue in
‘the November elections in which an
entire new Congress will be elected.
‘The primary in Alabama will be
held in April, the 6th, 1 believe. If
Underwood is defeated the Republi
cans all over the United States will
seize upon it as a rebuke to Wilson's
administration for Wilson is strong
for Underwood. So are the Demo
cratic Senators and the Democratic
Congressmen-—all of ‘em except
Hobson. If we have any Democrats
in Georgia who want to fight and
want to spout they ought to go over
into Alabama and fight where fight
ing will help the great Democratie
leader.

There is a Congressional Commit-|
tee down in Macon invostigating‘
Judge Emory Speer to see if im-;
peachmentproceedings shall be in
stituted against him for all sorts of
misdeeds and general unfitness for
the office. I never like to speak ill
of any one but just for the informa
tion of the readers of our old paper
1 will state that in my judgement
Judge Speer is not suited by temper
ament for a place on the bench.
I have known him ever since he was
appointed District Attorney by the
Republicans after he was defeated
for Congress by Allen Candler. The
trouble with Judge Speer is not a
lack of ability, for he is a brilliant
man, but his unspeakable vanity, his
~egotism and his selfishness. He is an
-autocrat, a sort of stage judge, a
left over product of some distant age
when mea believed In the divinity
<of kings. He is a man of whom it
was said that he could strut sitting.
He ought to resign and save the
«country further bother. I had to
hang around during the Archbald
impeachment and the Lorimer trial
and I don’t want any more of it. '«

Since we guarantee that all testimo

not fair to suppose that if Lydia E.
Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound has the
virtue to help these women it will help
any other woman who is suffering in a

If you are iii do not drag along until

is composed of pure, vegetable herbs,
contains no dangerous ingredients, and
acts gently, yet surely. It can be freely
used by young ard old, and should be
