SPRAYING TIME IS HARE SAYS
STATE AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE
Atlanta, Ga.,—lf you have only
‘one peach tree or ten thousand, and
want perfect fruit, yon must spray
to get it. Likewise, if you want to get
perfect apples on one tree or thous
ands of them, spraying with the
proper materials and at the proper
time is absolutely essential.
And spraying time is about here,
Within ten days or two weeks after
the blooms have fallen from the trees
‘the first spraying should be given,
‘and others should be given as indi
cated.
There are certain insects and dis
eases which attack the fruit, which
can be controlled in no other way
State Entomologist E. Lee Worsham
points out; and unless these insects
and diseases are controlled, there can
be no perfect fruit.
Peach growers all over Georgia sh
Peach growers all over Georgia
should be getting ready now to fight
the plum curculio and the brown rot,
Mr. Worsham says, for if they do not
this bug and disease are likely to
claim heavy toll of Georgia's biggest
money making fruit.
Every orchard grower is familiar
with these pests, but many of those
who have only a few trees and do
not make study of bugs and other
things that effect them, often wonder
why their fruit is wormy and why it
rots on the trees before it ripens.
The Bug that Makes The Worm.
The plum curcluio is the little bug
that makes the big fat worms grow
inside of the pretty peach, and which
the too eager teeth sometimes strike
before investigating. The brown
is a fungus growth which attacks the
fruit as it approaches maturity and
causes it to rot on the trees before it
is ready to be picked for market. Hne
loss« from brown rot has frequently
been as high as 25 to 50 per cent.,
and sometimes as high as 95 per cenr.
where its developement is encourag
ed by damp, wet weather. |
There is a way to control boch
these pests and produce perfect fruit.
It requires a little effort and a small
expense, but the result is well worth
it. .
The curculio is controlled by
spraying with a solution of arsenate
of lead in the proportion of 2 pounds
to 50 gallons of water, to which is
added a milk of lime solution made
from three pounds of stone limo.l
The trees should be sprayed with this
solution at last twice in the sprin;.:,‘
the first time just as the calyces or
shucks are shedding, which will bo!
ordinaaily about ten days or two
weeks after the pnk blooms have fal- |
len, and the second time about twu'
to three weeks later. Weak trees!
should never be sprayed more thzmi
twice, but in healthy, vigorous, or
chards where the foliage growth is‘
dense, three applications are recom
mended. This plan carefully fol
lowed will keep the worms out of
the peaches. »
For brown rot imiopunllonll_\' of
curculio, there should be at least
two sprayings with a home-made
lime sulphur solution which will be
described; one shortly after lh'*l
calyces or shucks have fallen and the
other about four weeks later. 1
Spraying for Botlx |
But it is uszual and most often m":-l
essary to spray for curculio and
brown rot at the same time, when‘
three sprayings are used as follows: |
I'irst Sprayin—About the time Uw}
calyces or shucks are shedding, using
solution of 2 pounds arsenate of lead
and three pounds stone lime to 50
gallons of water.
Second Spraying.—About three
weeks later, using self-boiled limeo
sulphur solution and arsenate of
lead combined, in the proportion of
8 pounds of lime 8 pounds of sulphur
and 2 pounds of arsenate of lead to
50 gallons of water.
Third Spraying.—About four
weeks after the second, using the
self-boiled lime-sulphur solution
alone, without the arsenate of lead.
The last spraying for brown rot
snould be made at least thirty days
before the fruit ripens.
If the curculio is numerous and
the trees are hardy and strong, ars
enate of lead may be added for the
third spraying.
The etomological department be
lieves three sprayings. necessary to
get the best re's%ms, but fairly good
results have been obtaitied from two
applicationS by psing the self-boiled
lime-sulphur solution with arsenate
of lead just after the calyces or
shucks have fallgn, and a second ap
plication of the same mixture about
four weeks later.
The Lime-Sulphur Solution.
The self-boiled lime-sulphur pre
paration should be made with a great
deal of care, as follows: take 24
pounds of lime and 24 pounds of sul
phur; put the sulphur into a 50-gal
lon barrel and make into a thia
paste by slowly adding cold water
and stirring until the sulphur is all
‘most. Stirring is necessary to pre
vent sulphur from lumping. To the
sulphur paste add enough cold water
to make six gallons, then add the
lime. Stir well and add more water
as required to keep the mixture from
becoming too thick—from four to
gix gallons. When the lime is all
slacked, which should be within fif
teen to twenty minutes, stop further
cooking by diluting with cold water.
The mixture should then be dilut
ed with cold water-so as to make
a total of 150 gallons and' strained.
If arsenate of lead is to be added
use six pounds to 150 gallons after
diluting to the required amount. The
arsenate of lead should be dissolved
in a small amount of water before
being added to the mixture. If cook
ing is not stopped when the lime is
slacked, the sulphur will continue
to dissolve, and the mixture may get
strong enough to injure the peach
foliage. What is wanted is simply a
good mechanical mixture of the lime
and sulphur wth as little of the lat
ter dissolved as possible. The strain
ing is important and should be care
fully done so as to prevent the noz
zles from cloggng while spraying. In
straining all the sulphur should be
washed through if possible.
Protecting the Apples. ;
The principle enemies against
which apple growers have to fight in
Georga are coddling moth or common
apple worm, apple scab, apple leaf
spot and bitter rot.
The coddling moth is an insect
pest most extensively found on apple
trees and most destructivetree. Thig
insect is controlled by spraying with
a solution of arsenate of lead, practi
clly the same as with the peach,
though the best results can be ob
tained with the apple only by using
a nozzle throwing a heavy, corse
spray, under high pressure—from
200 to 300 pounds. This pressure
is necessary in order to force the
poisonous spray into the inner calyx
80 that the coddling moth may be
killed as it attempts to enter.
The best results are obtained by
using two pounds of arsenate of lead
to 50 gallons of water, to which
should be added a milk of lime solu
tion made of three pounds of stone
lime. There should be at least two
sprayings with this mixture; the
first within a few days after the
sheddng of the bloom and the second
a week or ten days later than the
first.
Fungus Diseases of Apple.
Apple scab and apple leaf spot, de
structive fungus diseases seriously
affecting the trees and the fruit, are
controlled by the prepared lime and
sulphur solution spray. The first
spraying should be made with pre
pared lime and sulphur solution (not
the home made kind) at a strength
of two gallons to fifty gallons of
water, just before the cluster buds
open. The second spraying shou!d
take pldace within two or three weeks
with the same solution at a strength
of one and one-half gallons to fifly
gallons of water, and the third spray
ing three weeks later at the same
strength. It is very necessary for
both of these diseases, to apply the
first spraying of lime and sulphur
just before the cluster buds open and
not wait until the full leaf crop un
folds, in order to insure the best re
sults. By adding two pounds fo ar
senate of lead to the last two spray
ings for scab and leaf spot, the spray
will also control the coddling moth.
Fertilization and clean cultivation
wll render the trees more resstant
to these diseases.
Bitter rot is one of the most ser
ious diseases of the apple and is
more difficult to control than leaf
spot and scab. It is a fungus disease
that causes the apples to rot some
time before they are matured, usual-

by the prepared lime and sulphur
solution, the same as for leaf spot
and scab, but for the most effective
control of it, Bordeaux mixture
should be used late in the seasen,
from July 1 on. The Bordeaux mix
ture should not be used early in the
season because it liable to injure
the young and tender apples. There
should be two or three applications
of Bordeaux at intervals of two or
three weeks.
The Bordeaux mixture is made by
dissolving three or four pounds of
copper sulphate (bluestone) in a
wooden vessel containing twenty five
gallons of water. The bluestone
should be piaced in a bag and sus

just be submerged. In another vessel
four pounds of lime should be slack

pour the two mixtures together, let
ting them mix as they fall into the

Backache, urinary disorders, and
