THE MARIETTA JOURNAL AND COURIER
Mr. and Mrs. Clay’s Handsome Home
Mr. and Mrs. Ryburn Clay have
recently moved into their new resi
dence on Church street and every
one who sees it longs to build a
house as convenient, as comfortable,
and as altogether lovely as it is.
Mrs. Clay told her friends that she
would have an English cottage with
only a living room, a dining room
and a kitchen on the first floor, with
bed rooms up stairs and that seemed
simple enough and yet big enough
for a young couple.
When you behold this® cottage
from the street you see a pictur
esque front of snowy white, with
wide steps of red bricks, on the ends
of which stand some vivid green sun
plants in red pots, and that looks
very English. On each side of the
house is a brick paved veranda with
big round concrete pillars support
ing roofs that slope very little but
give an agreeable effect of coolness
and spaciousness.
The front door opens into a ves
tibule with what seems to be only a
plate glass mirror on the left side
but is really a door to a closet for
overcoats, hat, umbrellas, ete. The
living room is 33 1-2 feet long and
18 feet and 4 inches wide but the
wood work of fumed oak harmonizes
so well gwith the tan walls, and ceil
ing and the furniture of dark oak,
the effect is rather cozy than too
spacious. The open fire place is of
red brick with a long mantel and on
each side book cases built in under
casement windows. There is a re
cess in the front end of this room
and two doors with panes of glass
in the narrow shutters, one opening
into the dining room and the other
to a veranda. The dining room has
a built-in side-board with a narrow
mirror above it and the china and
glass closets are in the hall between
the dining room and kitchen. The
refrigerator is just outside the Kkit
chen which is a small room with the
most convenient little pantry and a
big coal range in a recess. Space
will not allow a description of all
the conveniences of this darling of
a house which are so snowy white,
especially in the lavatories and the
up-stairs wood-work.
The iiving room has a large libra
ry table of fumed oak in the center
and on the floor are two big deep
blue kermit Axminster rugs. On
one side is a davenport upholsterea
like the big rockers in dqu leathes
and on the other side is a long built
in settle with a space under the
hinged seat in which a family's win
ter clothes could be stored. This has
plain satin cushions the same blue as
the rugs.

ous and unobtrusive, unlike the
stairs of former times. On the li
brary table is a handsome drov
light with amber tints and a frame
of bronze. The lights around the
walls are like amber tinted lilies
with fixtures of hammered brass.
There is a space on one side for a
piano and on the other for a tea-ta

it
The hangings will be oriental
with blue and dark orange relieving
the deeper colors.
Up-stairs ave three bed-rooms and
a screened sleeping porch over the
kitchen.
One of the front bed-rooms is un
furnished. The other has a brass
bed and chiffonier, dressing-table
and bureau of fne golden brown oak
and buff rugs with borders of pink
roses. In Mrs. Clay’'s room the fur
niture is white enamel and wicker
and the rugs are light blue border
ed with ecru roses.,
All the rooms have closets and
most of the doors have shutters
made of bevelled French plate mir
rors. All these are inconspicuous;
but a long mirror i 8 a fine, though
silent mentor, showing us as others
see us and reminding us to appear
the best we can.
Mrs. Clay has already filled the
shelves of her preserve pantry with
dozens of glasses of jam and gallons
of sweet peach pickles. She has a
c> colored cook and everything in
her house is spotless and will he
easily kept so.
The lot is large and level and
there is a big orchard in the rear
part of the lot.
The situation is elevatd and the
views lovely, Almost across the
street is a meadow on the side of a
hill that is as green as the sky abova
it is blue and the only near neigh
bors are Mr. and Mrs. Cottingham
next door whose place is now bright
with flowers.
Mr. and Mrs. Clay have not yet
received all the furnishings and fix
tures for their house but it is a mod
el of convenience and comfort. 1t i 3
heated by a furnace in the basement
but has nice open fire places also.
There are many windows and plenty
of doors, all screened, and this beau
tifu! bome lis a model for oti-.r
builders.
Mrs. Clay explained her ideas of
the house she wanted, the architect
drew the plans and Mr. Tennent
Black superintended the building.
It is so well built and so harmoni
ous it will be ‘“a joy forever’.
