i ~ LUCKY LITTLE WAIF.
It is better than a fairy tale how
this little boy has landed in a snug
home harbor, although he did not
come “sailing with soft silken sails
from far off Dreamland into ours,”
lin the first place.
He was deserted recently by his
!parents when he was not quite five
‘months old, here in Marietta, left
alone asleep in a bed. However,
there was a kindhearted young
‘woman in the house who took the
ipoor helpless baby and cardd for
him, but she couldn’t keep him al
ways; so she sent word to Mrs. Tom
Florence, who acts for the Benovo
lent association. This good lady
found the waif with no clothes—so
she called a sewing bee to order in
her home last Wednesday afternoon,
and about fifteen pairs of willing
hands soon fashioned an outfit of
dainty garments. The baby was a
plump, brown eyed beauty, and all
he needed was a mother and father.
Mrs. Tom Hicks knew a couple she
was sure would be glad to have such
a baby. So on Saturday, Mrs. Har
ry DuPre came in her big car, with
her dear little son and daughter, and
took Mrs. Hicks, Mrs. Florence and
the little waif away out Powder
Springs road to the childless home
of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Johnson.
They soon agreed to adopt the
boy, and Mrs. Johnson declared he
was just the kind of baby she want
ed, and to think he had come in
such an up-to-date way !
Then Mrs. Hicks suggested hig
name should be Tom Hicks, but Mr.
Johnson declared he had a mule
named Tom Hicks—so Mrs. Florence
asked what they thought of naming
the baby Harry DuPre and calling
him DuPre. This suited every
body.
This is one of the things done
by the Benovolent asociation. Isn't
it just as wonderful and as beautiful
as if a fairy god mother had touch
ed the deserted infant with her
magie wand, and transported him
from utter misery into perfect bliss?
And to think everyone who helps
these noble women is taking part in
their good deeds!
